General Description / Primary Purpose:

The Coastal Technician provides technical assistance and support to the Department of Biology's ecological research programs and projects. The technician will oversee maintenance and safe operation of Biology vehicles and research vessels and other equipment used in ecological research, including field sampling gear and instruments and the department's seawater system and greenhouse.


Job Function:



  • Oversee maintenance and use of departmental vehicles and research vessels.

  • Assist students, staff, and faculty with ecological research projects.

  • Duties could include but are not limited to:

    • the operation of departmental vehicles, trailering, launching, and operation of departmental vessels

    • assisting in field research or educational/outreach activities

    • loading/unloading gear

    • cleaning equipment




  • Conduct basic maintenance and upkeep of ecological research equipment.

  • Implement emergency and disaster plans, when needed.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Research Laboratory Manager or Department Chair

Required Qualifications:

High school diploma and two years of experience directly related to the job functions. Directly related college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Departmental Requirements:

· A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. A major course of study in the sciences is preferred.· Strong organizational skills.· Ability to complete tasks independently.· Ability to lift, push, or carry a minimum of 50 lbs and work in harsh environments.· Must be able to swim and snorkel.· A valid driver's license is required.· Experience with personal computers and Microsoft Office applications.· Experience with boat trailering and operation is preferred.· Experience with aquarium maintenance is preferred.
