at Texas State University invites applications for the position of Clinical Assistant Professor or Clinical Associate Professor in Athletic Training.
Founded in 1899 as a small teaching college, Texas State University is now home to over 38,000 students. The university holds a Carnegie classification of Doctoral University-High Research Activity (R2) and is engaged in a strategic plan to attain Doctoral University-Very High Research Activity (R1) by 2027.
Texas State University is located along the beautiful San Marcos River. San Marcos is in the center of the innovation corridor, 40 minutes south of Austin and 60 minutes north of San Antonio, and is rich in vibrant and eclectic communities. The campus is situated within a public school district that is attended by more than 50 percent Latinx students.
The Department of Health and Human Performance serves approximately 2,300 undergraduate and graduate students seeking degrees in athletic training, exercise and sport science, public health, and recreation. The department is housed in the Jowers Center which includes 10 research laboratories, 4 teaching laboratories, and 10 classrooms. Three of the classrooms are designated as active learning classrooms, equipped with mobile desks and tables, portable whiteboards, and multiple viewing screens.


The department offers a CAATE-accredited Master of Science degree in Athletic Training. Athletic training (AT) faculty also teach undergraduate courses in the pre-rehabilitation sciences (PRS) concentration of the Bachelor in Exercise and Sports Science degree. Texas State University's athletic training education program has maintained continuous approval/accreditation since 1972 and graduated its 51st cohort of students in May 2023. Our program's long history of athletic training education includes didactic and clinical education at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and placement of graduates in athletic training careers at colleges and universities, high schools, professional sports, industry, and sports medicine clinics throughout the United States.


Clinical faculty teach courses emphasizing skills essential to professional practice, direct students' clinical and experiential learning, assess clinical skills and readiness for professional practice, participate in scholarly and professional engagement, contribute to program development and/or other areas of practical application, and provide service to the department, college, university, and profession. Clinical faculty are individuals who have elected to maintain their primary practice credentials and skills, which can specifically contribute to the academic programs particularly in the practice-based areas. This is a full-time, non-tenure track position with a nine-month academic year appointment beginning Fall 2024. Summer teaching opportunities are available. The successful candidate will:




  • Be responsible for delivering engaged learning activities and instruction in undergraduate and graduate courses in athletic training and pre-rehabilitation sciences.

  • Serve as an advisor for graduate student research.

  • Have active membership in relevant professional associations and organizations.

  • Serve on committees in the division, department, college, and university level.

  • Engage in active student recruitment activities.

  • Serve to promote and support the athletic training profession and academic programs at Texas State University.

Required Qualifications:


Required Qualifications for Clinical Assistant Professor:


  • Earned doctorate in AT or a related field prior to appointment.

  • Posses a current Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) certification, or equivalent state license, for a minimum of five years, to demonstrate current and contemporary competence.

  • 5+ years of above entry-level experience with paid work as an ATC, post-certification/licensure and potential for significant professional growth.

  • Experience in teaching.

  • Evidence of scholarship through relevant professional presentations, workshops, or publications related to the practice of AT.

  • Demonstrated service related to the practice of AT via relevant professional and/or community organizations.



Required Qualifications for Clinical Associate Professor:

  • Earned doctorate in AT or a related field prior to appointment.

  • Possess a current Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) certification, or equivalent state license, for a minimum of seven years, to demonstrate current and contemporary competence.

  • 7+ year of full-time experience with paid work as an ATC, post-certification/licensure and potential for significant professional growth.

  • Significant experience in teaching.

  • Evidence of sustained scholarship through relevant professional presentations, workshops, or publications related to the practice of AT.

  • Demonstrated service and leadership related to the practice of AT via relevant professional and/or community organizations.


Preferred Qualifications:


Preferred Qualifications for Clinical Assistant Professor:


  • Clinical AT experience.

  • Clinical certifications related to the practice of AT and PRS (e.g., CPR/AED, phlebotomy, IASTM, etc.).

  • Supervision of student research related to AT and PRS.

  • Experience teaching at the university level.



Preferred Qualifications for Clinical Associate Professor:

  • Significant clinical AT experience.

  • Clinical certifications related to the practice of AT and PRS (e.g., CPR/AED, phlebotomy, IASTM, etc.).

  • Significant supervision of student research related to AT and PRS.

  • Experience teaching at the university level at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
