Description

The University of Lynchburg, a private regional university, located in the beautiful foothills of
the Blue Ridge Mountains in central Virginia is seeking a full-time Groundskeeper Crew
Leader to join our university team.




The Groundskeeper Crew Leader reports to, is supervised by, and evaluated by the Grounds
Supervisor and Director of Grounds. The evaluation of work performance will be ongoing and
will be carried out by the Grounds Supervisor and Director of Grounds. It will include the
specific duties and responsibilities of this position description plus employee attitude and
general working behavior.

Job Purpose:
The Ground Crew Leader cares for the campus grounds and athletic fields with an emphasis
on safety and aesthetics in a manner of environmental consciousness. He/she utilizes the
best management practices to care for the campus surroundings. Performs work of moderate
difficulty and involves the day to day directing of the grounds staff and student workers under
the direct supervision of the Grounds Supervisor. The work involves completing daily on site
work assignments, and ensuring that work is accomplished in a timely manner.



Specific Job Duties:


1. Considered essential personnel and required to attend special events
(commencement, freshman convocation), storm events (winter and summer) and any
other event deemed necessary by the College


2. Seeding, sodding, pruning, grading, planting, mowing of the grounds,
applying pesticides, insecticides, fertilizers as directed, leaf collection
and removal, trash pickup, and keeping the formal garden(s) in
acceptable shape and other duties as assigned to maintain the campus


3. Performs minor repairs on signs and paved surfaces such as parking
lots and roads.


4. Performs minor repairs on grounds equipment and ensuring that proper
maintenance is performed in accordance with equipment manufacturers
recommendations


5. Exercises and enforces knowledge of safe working practices for grounds
work.


6. Performs snow removal and all related aspects such as: plowing, salting
and shoveling, etc.


7. Must be proficient in operating manual and powered tools such as walk
behinds mowers, zero turn mowers, snow removal equipment, tractors,
backhoe, bobcat and other grounds related equipment.


8. Performs the work on athletic fields for aesthetics and safety and all
related aspects including but not limited to: fertilizing, mowing, aerating,
slit seeding and dragging the fields, etc.


9. Prunes and maintaining of trees, shrubs and plants in an aesthetic
manner to allow for full potential growth and beauty.


10. Assists with trash collection when necessary and works to keep College
properties free of trash and debris.


11. Maintains proper tree/branch and shrubbery clearances from buildings
with respect to proper building clearances to reduce deterioration of
exterior facades and clogging of gutters and downspouts.


12. Maintains proper tree/branch/shrub clearances from electrical and
communication wires and clear of all footpaths, walkways, crosswalks
and trails to prevent any walking or overhead hazards.


13. Assists other departments, as directed with office and furniture moves
and event set-ups and other duties as assigned.


14. Ensures that all assigned task, work orders, and projects are performed
in a timely manner according to the Grounds supervisor.


15. Cooperatively works with all of the groundskeepers to achieve a mutual
goal.


16. Keeps the Grounds Supervisor informed of employee productivity, the
status of all completed, ongoing, or planned work and any potential
problems.


17. Ability to take guidance and direction from the Grounds Crew Supervisor
and communicate it clearly to the crew under their supervision.to
perform the work effectively.


18. Must set the standard for the individual grounds keepers conduct,
performance, job expectations, work ethic and a positive work
environment.


19. Provides feedback to the Grounds Supervisor with regard to staff
performances, abilities and progress.


20. Performs all other duties as assigned.


21. Seeks to treat each member of the College community with fairness,

Starting Salary: 18.00 - 24.00/hour

Schedule:
7:30 am - 4:00 pm Monday - Friday ( 8 hours/day with some evenings and weekends
to meet needs of the department may be required)

Mandatory with this position is the requirement for emergency and/or inclement
weather services as deemed by the Grounds Supervisor and Director of Grounds.



Experience/Skills:




· Must have a minimum of 3 years' experience in grounds related services
· Experience of 4 years in the grounds maintenance field preferred.
· Demonstrate a working knowledge of grounds supervision, maintenance techniques, practices, and equipment services.
· Classes in current horticulture practices will be considered a plus; completion of the program is preferred
· Fertilizer Certification is preferred but not required, however the ability to obtain certification is required
· Heavy lifting a must (over 50 pounds)
· Must have the ability to perform all tasks associated with general landscaping, grounds and field maintenance (i.e. pruning, mowing, aerating, slit-seeding, tree climbing, planting and digging etc.)
· Knowledge of tree planting and relocating
· Must be able to operate all types of landscape equipment (i.e. lawn equipment, chipper, chain saws, snowplows, etc.)
· Must be able to perform general service work on equipment in order to maintain proper operation (i.e. oil changes, grease fittings, change blades, replace string on weed-whackers, etc.)
· Must be familiar with installation, transplanting, cultural requirements and care of woody plants, herbaceous perennials and annuals native to the Lynchburg region
· The ability to perform arboricultural duties are preferred but not required
· Must possess a valid Virginia driver's license and in good standing
· Ability to work unsupervised and be self-motivated
· It is imperative the incumbent displays an understanding of, and supports the overall well-being of the College grounds environment



Must have a registered pesticide tech certification or be able to obtain
one within 6 months of employment
.



Physical Demands:
Prolonged standing
Work is primarily performed outdoors, sometimes during extreme weather conditions.
Work is performed on ground level and above ground level, requiring the ability to safely climb ladders and stairs.
Work requirements involving lifting or otherwise moving materials weighing approximately 75 lbs.
This is a physically demanding job, requiring considerable stooping, bending, reaching, kneeling and walking considerable distances on campus property.
Tasks require the ability to stand or walk with little sitting and continuously perform essential functions for an 8-hour shift, with 2 fifteen minute breaks and a 30 minute meal break.
Occasional overtime, holiday or weekend work required in emergencies.
Little travel, other than to local nursery or for trash removal.
This position is designated as Essential Personnel as outlined in the staff handbook of
personnel policies and procedures.

Qualifications


Required Qualifications:
Valid and unrestricted Virginia state driver's license in good standing is required
Must be able to obtain a registered pesticide tech certification within the first year.
