Job Summary
This position will work with both the Kenaitze Environmental Program as well as the Cultural Resources Program, spending approximately 50% of their time with each. Interns will work on a variety of environmental projects, especially those focused on local water quality, invasive species and climate change-related issues, and will be involved in a number of subsistence harvesting and Dena'ina cultural knowledge opportunities. Internship Program placements offer an educational experience, opportunities to build on job skills, career readiness, and gain exposure to the Kenaitze Indian Tribe's services and operational processes.
Essential Functions
Works with Environmental and Cultural Resource staff to assist in day-to-day activities of the departmentsParticipates in weekly meetings and contributes to task planning for the weekLearns about Dena'ina culture and historyPartakes in local water quality monitoring efforts and beach clean-ups and supports the Tribe's campus-wide recycling programAssists in harvest and preservation of plants and fishLearns about invasive species identification and participates in planned plant eradication activitiesHelps out at educational events designed to promote community outreach and keep the public informed of Kenaitze's environmental and cultural programming and efforts (will on 2-3 occasions involve weekend hours to be discussed in advance)Participates in archaeological projectsAssists with cultural presentationsAbility to work flexible hours, not to exceed 40 hours per weekEnsures compliance with Tribal, federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, Tribal policies and TERO ordinance

This position is a Covered Position subject to all requirements of the Alaska Barrier Crimes Act (ABCA) and to the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, (ICPA). ABCA and ICPA requirements apply and must be complied with at all times in order to remain in the position.
