We are looking for Part-Time/ Casual Data Collectors to join the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) Project as part of the UTHealth School of Public Health in Houston, TX. This hourly position will require availability during the day and on weekends. The Interviewer will be primarily responsible for conducting structured interviews with participants who inject drugs as part of our ongoing research projects. This role requires a compassionate approach and an ability to navigate sensitive topics with discretion and professionalism.

The National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) project collects data to monitor HIV behavioral risk factors among persons at high risk for HIV infection. The project is conducted in over 20 U.S. cities with the highest prevalence of HIV. NHBS data collectors are trained to use a standardized anonymous questionnaire to collect information on HIV-related risk behaviors, HIV testing, and the use of HIV prevention services. All participants are offered a free HIV test regardless of their HIV status.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  • Assist in determining participant eligibility for project activities
  • Review consent information regarding the study
  • Conduct face-to-face interviews with study participants using standardized tools and protocols.
  • Build rapport with participants to facilitate open and honest communication.
  • Ensure confidentiality and anonymity of all research participants.
  • Accurately record responses and manage data collection tools, such as surveys and questionnaires.
  • Adhere to ethical guidelines and practices in all interactions with participants.
  • Participate in training sessions and team meetings to stay updated on project objectives and methods.
  • Report any issues or concerns that arise during interviews to the research coordinator or supervisor.

Certification/Skills:

  • Trained by project manager or principal on techniques to interview, complete questionnaires, and operate equipment. May need to be bilingual.

Preferred:

Due to the nature of the research population and the settings, the interviewer must be comfortable working in diverse and potentially challenging environments.


  • Spanish-speaking preferred
  • Must be able to travel to data collection sites alone.

Minimum Education:

  • High School diploma

Minimum Experience:

  • Two years related experience with emphasis on public contact.
    May substitute required experience with equivalent years of education beyond the minimum education requirement.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.

Security Sensitive:

This job class may contain positions that are security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code § 51.215

Residency Requirement:

Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
