The mission of Counseling and Well-Being Services is to provide culturally competent psychological services to enhance the mental health and wellness of students through crisis intervention, counseling, consultation, coaching, psychoeducation, and preventative resources. Counseling and Well-Being Services offers a variety of psychological services including counseling, psychotherapy and, psychological assessments of general personal functioning and emotional disorders. Additionally, we offer case management and life skill coaching and mentoring in a professional client model and in an atmosphere that is welcoming and confidential for all students and residents.
The Director provides leadership, vision and management of the professional services that address the psychosocial, developmental, and mental health needs of Meharry Medical College students. The Director organizes departmental strategic planning and assessment and actively participates in divisional strategic planning and assessment initiatives. The Director serves as the chair of behavioral intervention and threat assessment team (CARE) and as an active participant and a consultant on psychological and behavioral issues which impact students. Additionally, the Director provides consultation and serves as liaison to key college officers and other departments regarding student mental health concerns.
Daily Operations
Ensures counseling services are available to students, ensures the continuous quality improvement and evaluation of counseling services on an ongoing basis
Develop and administer college protocols and procedures in keeping with current best practices for college counseling centers
Develop and maintain college data related to service delivery, service improvement, and accreditation
Directs the human, financial, and other resources needed to accomplish objectives of the Counseling Center
Develops, monitors, and administers the Counseling Center's budget.
Provide mental health services such as individual and group therapy, crisis intervention, and case management.
Provide culturally competent service to a diverse student population.
Recommend, hire, orient, train, and evaluate assigned staff; monitor and coordinate staff development and training programs.
Provides campus-wide training and workshops with an emphasis on educating faculty, staff and students to make appropriate referrals to the center
Provide crisis intervention and after-hours emergency on-call coverage
Works with key personnel to identify, assess, and monitor at-risk students
Maintains an electronic medical record for clinical notes, scheduling and developing reports
Provides annual evaluation and summary of counseling center operations, services, and outcomes, as well as strategies and recommendations for addressing service demands and student mental health needs.

Provide outreach and consultation to campus community
Knowledge and experience with mental health issues in higher educations
Strong interpersonal skills, including strong oral, written, and listening communication capabilities
Utilize evidence-based practices to plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate mental health and wellness programming
The ability to provide psychological and other screening instruments as appropriate
Required Education/Experience
Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, Counseling, or other mental health related discipline.
Licensed in Tennessee
Experience in a college/university counseling center, preferably
Demonstrated management, budgetary, strategic management and leadership skills
Ability to think critically, problem solve, and make sound decisions daily and in crisis situations
A minimum of five years experience in counseling or mental health center of comparable scale and complexity
