NOTICE OF CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATION 

Notice is hereby given that the Cuyahoga Falls Civil Service Commission
will administer an open-competitive Written Examination for the following position:

LINEMAN CLASS A (JOURNEYMAN) – ELECTRIC DEPARTMENT
CITY OF CUYAHOGA FALLS, OHIO

Date, Time & Place of Examination:

Tuesday, June 18th, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. at Lion's Park Lodge, 641 Silver Lake Ave, Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44221.  (Registration starts at 5:00 p.m.).  A valid driver’s license or State-issued ID must be presented for identification purposes on the evening of the examination.

Job Summary:

Under directive or general supervision, engages in any of the work of operation, construction, and maintenance of energized transmission and primary lines.

 

Type of Examination:

Written – No review will be granted for this examination.
 

 

Examination Fee:

There is no fee for this exam.

Veteran Credit:

20% extra credit for an applicant who has completed service in the uniformed services, has been honorably discharged, or has transferred to the reserve with evidence of satisfactory service, or is a Member of the National Guard or a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States who, at the time of the examination, has completed more than 180 days of active duty service under an executive order of the President of the United States or an act of the Congress of the United States; OR, 15% extra credit for any applicant who is a member in good standing of a reserve component of the Armed Forces of the United States, including the National Guard.
A copy of Form DD-214 (proof of honorable discharge) or certificate of service must be submitted with the application online to be eligible for this extra credit.

Examples of Duties

  • Installing and removing poles; installing and changing insulator assemblies.
  • Stringing, splicing, sagging, insulating, and tying in conductors and wires.
  • Installing transformers, capacitors, line disconnects, reclosers, and associated equipment.
  • Changing distribution transformers, phasing out and banking transforms, and making proper connections.
  • Working on the energized primary when required or energized transmission line utilizing “hotline” tools when qualified.
  • Making cutovers from old poles and equipment to new or temporary installations of a similar nature.
  • Installing safety equipment such as rubber blankets and protectors on conductors and equipment; maintaining high standards of safety.
  • Preparing written and oral reports.
  • Inspecting poles, lines, and associated equipment.
  • Performs all duties listed for Lineman B.
  • Directs employees of suitable classification in the operation of the daytime service truck and street light maintenance truck.
  • Works voltages up to 3 phase 23,860 with rubber gloves.

Typical Qualifications

Must be a high school graduate or equivalent and at least 18 years old. Must have at least 1 year of experience as a Journey Lineman, and have demonstrated aptitude for and ability in the performance of the duties of Journey Lineman.  Must have physical and mental attributes to climb and work aloft.  Must have the ability to learn the layout, functions, and operations of the electrical equipment involved.  Must have a thorough knowledge of an electrical system’s construction and maintenance methods and practices.  Must be thoroughly familiar with the proper application of protective equipment for the protection of personnel and equipment. Must have the knowledge and ability to glove voltages up to 3 phase 23,860.

Knowledge of:   The safe application, use, and care of hoists, tackles, and tools used in work; the fundamental principles of line construction and operation of circuits; the principles of operation and proper application of firefighting equipment installed on the Electrical System; and the safety, first aid, and resuscitation practices of the Electrical System.
 
Skilled in:  The use and operation of protective equipment and devices used on or near energized conductors; the practices and procedures for grounding lines and capacitors for the protection of personnel and equipment.     
Ability to:  Climb and work aloft; work from simple drawings and make simple field sketches; and operate two-way radio communication equipment; learn the layout, functions, and operation of the electrical equipment and circuit connections of the transmission and distribution system.

Supplemental Information

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:  Must possess a valid State of Ohio driver’s license and ability to maintain continuing eligibility under the City’s driver eligibility standards. Must possess a valid State of Ohio Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).   If hired as a Lineman Class A from outside the City must meet the one-year probationary period before being able to be a stand-by trouble person.
