CHEMICAL APPLICATOR

Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Noxious Weed Director, the Chemical Applicator performs skilled and semi-skilled manual work in the control and eradication of noxious weeds on the county, state, and township property, and railroad right-of-ways. Work involves operating a variety of light, specialized equipment, and performing related manual tasks. Knowledge of chemicals used for noxious weed eradication and safe application techniques are required.

Essential Function Statement(s)
Operate trucks, weed sprayers, pickups, forklifts, and related equipment in the control of noxious weeds.Safely spray infested areas with chemical solutions.Perform job-related repair, cleaning and maintenance tasks within the Department.Patrol designated areas to locate noxious weeds.Unload and load chemicals off and on trucks.Maintain equipment and vehicles ensuring cleanliness and peak mechanical operation.Complete proper work reports and forms.Become familiar with all jobs under the responsibility of the Noxious Weed Director.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
Assist with chemical sales, household hazardous waste and mowing as requested. Other related duties as necessary or required.

SKILLS & ABILITIES
Experience: This is an entry-level position. One to three years chemical application experience is preferred. The employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills within one year in the position.

Education: High school diploma or GED. Department of Agriculture certification or ability to obtain certification within twelve months of hire. Kansas Department of Health and Environment certification required within twelve months of hire.

Skills: Technical knowledge of equipment calibration, chemical formulas, mapping, and the chemical application to eradicate noxious weeds. Ability to operate trucks, pickups, forklifts, sprayers and other related construction and road maintenance equipment. Ability to read and interpret labels and other work-related written documents.
Problem Solving: Problem-solving exists in this position. Determining factors and environmental elements, which may cause problems with safe chemical applications.
Decision Making: Following established guidelines decisions are made to complete assignments most safely and efficiently.
Accountability: Employee is not responsible for budgetary control of the division and does not participate in the annual division budgetary process.
Supervision: Requires limited direct supervision. Job assignments and reports are reviewed by the director. The position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
Personal Relations: Continual contact with county departments and the general public.
Working Conditions: Job performance involves physical effort and manual labor. Extreme weather conditions and toxic fumes and chemicals are factors in this position.
Physical Requirements: Ability to verbally communicate with employees, supervisors, and the general public; work extended hours as required; extreme physical effort and labor required to operate and maintain equipment; ability to lift and carry heavy boxes and tools.
