Job Description:

Under thedirection of the Chief Radiation Therapist and Lead Radiation Therapist, theStaff Radiation Therapist is responsible for the delivery of radiation therapytreatment as prescribed by the radiation oncologist, daily maintenance andquality assurance checks for the equipment, maintenance of the inventory ofdepartment supplies, and administrative quality assurance checks as assigned.


1. Responsiblefor daily patient care and education.


•Appropriately involves the patient and their family in care and care decisions.


• Maintainsand demonstrates respect for patient confidentiality and modesty.


• Explains thetreatment procedure.


• Arrangesdaily radiation treatment schedule.


• Monitorspatient's physical and physiological response and reactions to treatment andrefer patient for appropriate management as needed.


2. Administersradiation therapy treatment accurately and safely.


• Monitors andreports treatment variances and inconsistencies.


• Accuratelydocument all treatment delivery information in the electronic medical record(EMR).


3. Responsiblefor the safe and accurate utilization of all aspects of the EMR and Record andVerify system.


Possessesknowledge of all scheduling, treatment, image review, and billing proceduresinvolving the EMR system.


5.Demonstrates ability to accurately perform all required new start chart checksand weekly chart checks.


6. Positions,immobilizes and aligns patients according to the treatment plan and effectivelyevaluate and assist in solving set-up issues.


7. Understandsthe function of all equipment, accessories, treatment methods policies,procedures, protocols and applies knowledge appropriately.


8. Assists theLead Radiation Therapist to develop new techniques or resolve clinicalproblems.


9.Participates in and appropriately documents the Time Out procedure for everytreatment verification and daily treatment.


10. Utilizesthe Quality Assurance (QA) program to encompass all aspects of treatment,treatment delivery and quality patient care.


11.Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of the principles of growth and developmentfrom all life stages, ranging from infancy to geriatric. In addition, s/he mustpossess the ability to assess patient relative data as deemed pertinent toage-specific needs and provide care as described in the department's policy andprocedure manual.


12.Demonstrates an understanding of the patient functional mobility assessmenttool and mobilizes patients using appropriate mechanical assistive devices,such as ceiling lifts and lateral transfer devices, during the provision ofpatient care.


13.Demonstrates cooperation and responsiveness to all staff members.


• Modelsappropriate professional behavior, such as, but not limited to: courtesy,respect, constructive assertiveness, effective listening.


• Effectivelyutilizes professional problem solving and negotiation skills to manageconflict.


14. Attendsregularly scheduled Therapist staff meetings.


15. Attendsregularly scheduled continuing education activities.


16.Participates in some clinical instruction and evaluation of the RadiationTherapy Technology students.


17. Worksflexible shifts as directed by the Chief and Lead Radiation therapists,depending on patient volume and departmental needs.


• Coverage maybe necessary on weekends and holidays in certain circumstances.


• Adapts tocontingency plans, which are in response to variables which influence workloadand/or schedule.


18. Rotates toother treatment areas as directed by the Chief and Lead Radiation Therapist.These areas may include specialty areas such as the simulation suites, Cobalt60 TBI unit, stereo units, HDR suite, MR suite.


19. May berequired to travel to network satellite clinics as directed by the ChiefRadiation Therapist.
20. Other duties as assigned.



Qualifications

Must haveproficient technical knowledge and skill set. This includes but is not limitedto demonstrating efficient knowledge of all equipment operation, tools andprocedures specific to assigned area. This also includes demonstrating theability to effectively troubleshoot issues as they arise.


2. Ability toestablish and maintain effective interpersonal professional relationships withphysicians, management, peers, patients, and their families.


3. Must conveya positive attitude and present a professional appearance.


4. Must haveeffective communication (both oral and written) skills sufficient to resolveconflicts, and relay information concisely to staff, patients, and otherhospital personnel.


5. Must havesufficient organizational skills.


6. Demonstratestrong customer service skills, including the ability to use appropriatejudgment, independent thinking and creativity when resolving issues andconflict.


7. Demonstrateinitiative and the ability to work independently.


8. Demonstratethe ability and flexibility to effectively handle challenging and stressfulsituations and to balance and shift multiple priorities.


9. Must havethe ability to adapt to frequent interruptions and shifting priorities in afast-paced environment.


10. Must haveinterpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients who maybe under physical and/or emotional stress.


11. Must haveto ability to handle sensitive and confidential patient information.


12. Must beproficient in the use of the Radiation Oncology Information Systems andsoftware and Hospital Information Systems that integrate with the Department ofRadiation Oncology, including, but not limited to: ARIA, EPIC, ExacTrac,Eclipse


Required


• ValidMassachusetts State License in Radiation Therapy


• Valid ARRTcertification in Radiation Therapy must be obtained by the end of the 3-monthprobation period


• Valid BLScertification
