Job Description
Chronicle Heritage is hiring a Staff or Associate Maritime Archaeologist to support our maritime archaeology program. This position offers a positive and diverse work environment, and colleagues who are supportive, passionate, and collectively focused on work/life balance and producing high-quality CRM documents. The Maritime Archaeologist will:
Conduct historical and archival research
Assist with remote sensing surveys and processing, both in the field and office
Use of Hypack Navigation Software and/or Processing
Use of Sonarwiz
Use of magnetometer processing software such as Oasis Montaj or MagPick
Write scientific and technical reports
Support data management
Effectively communicate with team members, contractors, and clients
Perform other duties as assigned
Utilize GIS to support maritime archaeology program
Support cultural resource operations, via boating activities
Write scientific and technical reports
Support submerged cultural resource data management
Support sanctuary education, outreach, and interpretation programs
Seek outside funding to support sanctuary programs
Participate in diving operations
Ensure the safe practices and proper operational techniques both on land and offshore
Support all phases of archaeological investigation and regulatory compliance
Be willing to manage or follow piers throughout field operations.
Complete accurate, detailed, and comprehensive field documentation
Complete office work, including technical writing related to pre- and post-field activities
Direct collection, analysis, and interpretation of data; formulate recommendations and solutions to highly complex problems or those involving risk
Work with technical field, lab, and office staff to ensure projects meet Chronicle Heritage standards
Observe and uphold Chronicle Heritage'sFieldwork ProceduresandHealth and Safetyrequirements
Hire Type:Hourly, as-needed Schedule:Monday-Friday, standard business hours; occasional weekend work depending on projects Location:Must reside in Pensacola, Florida
Required Qualifications
Advanced degree in maritime archaeology, archaeology, anthropology, or closely related field
1+ years of experience working on/directing maritime archaeology projects
1+ years of experience with analysis and technical report writing
Expertise in maritime archaeological field methods and data collection
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project)
Meet or exceed the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology
Able to work in an outdoor environment for prolonged periods of time and in a range of weather conditions
Be willing to travel and stay overnight on short- and long-term projects(up to 25% travel)
Valid driver's license
Open Water Diver (OWD) certification
Experience with boat handling and working on larger vessels
Current U.S. Passport
Preferred Skills
Listed on the Register of Professional Archaeologists
Ability to identify submerged archaeological features
Demonstrable experience and professional working with crews during archaeological studies
Proficient organizational, schedule, and budget skills
Familiarity with GPS and GIS data collection in the field
Familiarity with Section 106 processes and NRHP eligibility criteria for sites
Ability to endure adverse environmental conditions, including hot and cold temperatures, precipitation, and challenging terrain for sustained durations
Excellent attention to detail,a positive work ethic, reliability, and commitment to working both independently and in a team environment
Strong organizational skills with task and time management
Excellent leadership skills in the field
First Aid/CPR Certification
