Position Overview
Under limited supervision, the mechanic position performs work of considerable difficulty in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment; performs related work as assigned.This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.
Mechanic A - Any Mechanic who is qualified to repair the various equipment without supervision.
Mechanic B - Any Mechanic who is qualified to do most of the Repair Work on the equipment with a minimum of supervision.
Mechanic Helper C - Any shop employee who helps Mechanics in the higher classifications, but is not qualified to do the work done by them, except under close supervision, and those who work in the storage yard or perform other work and all parts room employees.
Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
Perform all levels of repair and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
Diagnose and troubleshoot problems, give recommendations for repair and make all critical machine and engine repairs and adjustments.
Remove and install parts, disassemble and assemble components, and test and adjust assemblies with minimal supervision.
Test and verify correct operations of all repairs and adjustments.
Prepares and maintains records and reports.
Maintain work area, tools, and equipment to promote a clean and safe environment.
May act as lead person in supervisor's absence.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned .
Dependable and reliable attendance.
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education/Experience
Within the last 10 years, five years of experience and/or training in vehicle/construction equipment repair and maintenance shop or any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
Must be able to read and comprehend specifications, service and parts literature, technical bulletins and other publications.
Proficient computer skills and the ability to learn to effectively use company software - with training.
Associate's degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school ideal.
Basic mechanical knowledge including electrical and hydraulics.
General knowledge of basic hand tools, air tools, precision measuring tools and instruments, diagnostic software, cranes and rigging equipment.
Experience with acetylene and electric arc welding.
Work Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions. The noise level in the work environment can be loud.
