Job Description:

University of New Mexico Foundation

Senior Vice President of Development

Albuquerque, New Mexico

The University of New Mexico Foundation's (Foundation) vision is to empower the University of New Mexico (UNM) to advance education, research, and health for the benefit of our community and the world. The mission of the Foundation is to create powerful engagements and partnerships that lead to increased philanthropy, investment, innovation, and support for UNM. In support of this vision and mission, the UNM Foundation seeks a senior vice president for development (SVP) to lead the development teams and ensure continued growth in the culture of philanthropy at the University and the advancement of best practices across the fundraising spectrum. Currently in the third year of the quiet phase of the University's next comprehensive campaign, the SVP will play a leading role in ensuring the continued success and progress of the campaign including preparing for the public phase.

The University of New Mexico is the State's flagship institution. A Carnegie very high research (R1) university, UNM provides the full range of education, scholarly research, creative endeavors, and public service to the State and its citizens, including NCAA Division I athletics, and a comprehensive academic medical center (including a teaching hospital) on four sites, including the historic campus in Albuquerque, where the Foundation is headquartered. UNM is a majority minority university. An independent 501(c)(3) organization, the Foundation is fully aligned with the activities and goals of the University, and its leader is counted among its senior administration.

Reporting to Jeff Todd, President and CEO of the University of New Mexico Foundation, the SVP will be an integral part of his nine-person executive team and serve as the CEO's chief deputy. In collaboration and partnership with the Foundation's three vice presidents for development (academic (main campus), health sciences, and central) as well the other members of the Foundation's executive team, the SVP will lead the team through the next phase of the campaign and prepare for the public launch, while at the same time aggressively continuing to seek support for the University's ongoing needs. It is anticipated that the Foundation will continue to raise in excess of $100 million annually, with that total expected to continue increasing throughout the campaign. The new SVP will join the Foundation at an ideal time with a solid infrastructure in place following significant organizational growth over the last three years in the capacity and capabilities of the organization. The campaign will be an exciting and aspirational platform for the University that will capture the imagination of prospects and elevate the overall profile of UNM.

Accomplishing these tasks successfully requires a development leader of considerable experience and success in all facets of development. Demonstrating a successful track record as a major gift fundraiser (including experience with principal gifts) within a university setting, the new SVP will benefit from ten or more years of progressively responsible leadership experience, preferably within an institution of equal or greater complexity-research intensive with a large health sciences system (clinical and academic); direct experience with a comprehensive institutionally related foundation is preferred. Superior strategic skills are of the utmost importance, as are excellent relationship-building, listening, and communication skills. The SVP will be a person of prodigious energy with a positive, affirming approach to management, with a deep commitment to strategic and operational planning, professional development, and training. A bachelor's degree is required, and an advanced degree is preferred.

The University of New Mexico Foundation is poised to significantly increase its capacity to support the University of New Mexico and thus to have a direct and lasting impact on the citizens of the State and beyond. Its next leader will play a critical role in that success.

All applications, nominations, and inquiries are invited. Applications should include, as separate documents, a CV or resume and a letter of interest addressing the themes in the profile available at the bottom of this page.
