Job Description:

Lateral civil-rights litigation associates.

We are seeking trial lawyers, committed to the public interest, who wish to enforce constitutional and civil rights; advocate for victims of racial, sex, and other forms of discrimination and retaliation; fight for whistleblowers; and advance the causes of police and other government accountability. If this is why you want to law school yet you find yourself doing something else, then this may be your opportunity to fight for righteous causes, and not just on cases over other people's money.

Lateral litigators (at least one year of litigation or judicial-clerkship experience)-posted on a rolling basis until filled

We seek litigators to advance the causes of our clients in civil-rights and constitutional litigation including in the areas of police misconduct, First Amendment rights, and employment retaliation, among others. For a broader look at our civil-rights practice areas, click here.

Applicants must have at least one year of litigation experience, which may include judicial clerkships.

Preferred candidates will have many if not all of the following attributes:

  • Demonstrated commitment to and passion for civil rights, civil liberties, and the public interest,
  • Strong academic and other credentials, including firm or public-service experience-with judicial clerkships being a significant plus,
  • Polished plain-English writing skills (no use of legalese), with significant, persuasive legal-writing experience,
  • Strong work ethic with the ability to manage a significant volume of complex work,
  • Self-organized, efficient, and detail-oriented,
  • Drive to prevail on client clauses,
  • Strong sense of ethics and professionalism,
  • Grit and persistence,
  • Growth-mindset-desire to learn,
  • Collaborative, team-oriented attitude, with ego in check,
  • Sense of humor,
  • Progressive, community commitment-demonstrated change agent, and
  • Ohio bar admission, or eligibility to obtain provisional admission upon job offer and admission without examination.

Karaoke skills go a long way too.

Qualified candidates should submit the following in .pdf format through the hiring page on our website, not through the OSBA's website: https://www.chandralaw.com/about/hiring.

  • Cover letter addressed to Mr. Subodh Chandra articulating what you would be able to contribute to the types of causes we champion,
  • Resume,
  • List of at least three professional references,
  • Three unprivileged or appropriately redacted writing samples (substantive briefs preferred), and
  • For candidates less than four years out of law school, law-school transcript.

Before applying, candidates should study our blog and practice areas to determine whether our work is right for you, and so you may articulate what you would be able to contribute to the types of causes we champion. It would be helpful if, in your cover letter, you address the above attributes that apply to you.

Base compensation will depend upon experience, although applicants should keep in mind that ours is a public-interest law firm.

Chandra Law is an equal-opportunity employer, committed to effectively serving its diverse clientele. We strongly encourage applications from candidates from non-traditional legal backgrounds, including persons of color, persons of all genders and sexual orientations, first-generation professionals, and persons with disabilities.
