Description

As the Senior Building Environmental Science Engineer, you will provide expertise in numerical analytical methods and understanding of mechanical systems in buildings to analyze, optimize and quantify system performance, temperature control, energy use, carbon emissions for the Design Studio. Use a range of computational analytical tools to numerically and graphically demonstrate impacts of physical or mechanical factors in the modelling of moisture, airflow and temperatures in the design of mission critical and high performing environments.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Analysis:

  • Leverage expertise and complete CFD analysis to provide understanding for different building types including: datacenters; high performance building design; stadiums; clean rooms, healthcare etc.
  • Lead analysis including load, thermal, velocity and momentum for fluids.
  • Develop expertise in analysis using similar numerical tools for thermal comfort, ventilation analysis, air presure relationships etc in complex buildings and other mechanical systems
  • Undertake spreadsheet and mathematical analysis of fluid flow problems.
  • Develop expertise in water resource analysis, whole building energy analysis, heating/cooling load calculations, renewable energy software and tools, etc.
  • Optimize the analysis approach to describe and allow options for client discussions and decision-making.
  • Provide technical direction to identify solutions to address several different areas in building design + performance including: air movement, thermal performance, control of moisture, and energy.
  • Propose creative ways of manipulating principal aspects of a building’s features to meet environmental, performance and resiliency goals.
  • Optimize integration with BIM and other building software to seek to streamline analysis processes.
  • Lead the development of standalone tools to assist architects, clients, contractors and other designers to optimize and expedite decisions.
  • Use parametric software and scripts to maximize options for strategic and quantitively informed decisions.
  • Manage the software and licensing requirements for the standalone ANSYS package and needs.

Analysis for Benchmarks and Compliance:

  • Understand and apply needs of different frameworks and rating systems to meet performance goals.
  • Assist building sustainability analysis as needed to help define goals and achieve compliance.
  • Understand and apply Building Codes using calculation and software innovatively for engineered solutions which show a performance-based approach.

Documenting and Presenting of Information:

  • Ensure analysis results is explained in clear concise language for reports and presentation documents.
  • Manage training through associated disciplines.
  • Ensure quality control for all work in teams.
  • Clearly deliver compliance documentation for City, State, National requirements.
  • Maximize impact of presentations showing results and the use of tools in technical conferences and meetings.
  • Optimize integration with BIM and other software for aesthetically pleasing and clearly understandable graphics.
  • Develop materials for internal and external use to showcase Harris as a thought leader and creative team in advanced mechanical design.

Miscellaneous:

  • Contribute to the desired safety and work culture of the organization.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  1. What we're looking for in you
  • Bachelor's degree in building physics, Mechanical Engineering, Building Science Engineering, or related is required.
  • 4+ years in engineering design
  • 4+ years advanced knowledge of building systems designs and performance in commercial buildings, public buildings, institutional buildings, healthcare buildings, mission-critical facilities, etc.
  • 4+ years energy, thermal, comfort and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) computer simulation software
  • 4+ years MS Office – Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Pay Range: $67,852 – 101,779 per year.

The actual salary offer will vary by candidate based on a wide range of factors such as specific skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
