Finance Consultant - Mortgage REIT Accountant (Remote) at Roth Staffing Companies in Newport Beach, California

Job Description:

We are looking for a Finance Consultant will collaborate directly with Alternative Finance team and external service providers overseeing a private mortgage Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) with assets exceeding $5 billion. The current structure relies on a third-party administrator, outsourced accounting service provider, and outsourced chief accounting officer.


The Finance Consultant will play a vital role in supporting the growth of the private mortgage REIT and refining financial processes and controls. Successful candidates will possess strong communication skills, attention to detail, organizational abilities, and an interest in accounting for residential RMBS, residential mortgage loans, and corresponding securitizations, including revenue recognition and consolidation.


Solid technical accounting skills and a grasp of GAAP concepts are essential, along with the ability to determine proper accounting entries. Knowledge of accounting requirements for RMBS, mortgage loans, securitization and re-securitization transactions, repurchase agreements, interest rate swaps, and TBAs is highly desirable.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Collaborate with the REIT Finance Team to review third-party service providers' investment accounting processes and outputs.


• Review third-party service providers' preparation of accounting and financial statements and oversee monthly general ledger maintenance, including bank reconciliations, intercompany accounts, and tracking mortgage interest payments and expenses.


• Handle accounting and reporting for whole loan pools (purchases, sales, and securitizations) and review Trust Account reconciliations.


• Assist with managing the REIT's legal entity and account structure, overseeing the formation and assignment of new accounts and legal entities.


• Review daily deliverables, identify and analyze significant variances with the assistance of the administrator.


• Prepare/review daily projected cash flow/liquidity reporting and process wires.


• Support the monthly and quarterly close processes:


• Review journal entries for daily cash activity, including trades, remittances, and various other receipts and disbursements.


• Assist with the monthly structured financing waterfall process, coordinating among the asset and financing portfolio management team, financing counterparties, agent banks, and fund administrator.


• Assist with the closing of any new structured financings and review related financial reporting covenants.


• Assist in the preparation of daily and monthly general ledger entries and review journal entries into the Company's GL system.


• Assist in preparing consolidated financial statements by gathering and analyzing information from the general ledger system and various departments.


• Review/prepare monthly work papers, monthly accruals, and account roll-forwards.


• Maintain process & procedures documentation.

• Undergraduate degree in Accounting and/or Big 4 experience.


• 4+ years of accounting experience in the financial services sector.


• Strong drive and demonstration of initiative.


• Hands-on experience with general ledger systems is helpful.


• Proficient in Microsoft Excel, including advanced functions and working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook and Word.


• Strong attention to detail, effective communication skills, and strong organizational abilities.


• Ability to identify opportunities and make recommendations for process improvements across the business.
