Job Description:

Camp is looking to open our waitlist for the last 2 weeks of summer and need additional stuff to work. Use your skill and passion to help us engage wich more kid's!

1. Job Summary:
The Camp Lifeguard is responsible for supervising the aquatics area to prevent accidents, assist swimmers, and respond to emergencies. The incumbent will create a safe, enjoyable and positive atmosphere that promotes participant safety and satisfaction in accordance with the YMCA policies and procedures. The Camp Lifeguard will oversee and facilitate multiple activities including but not limited to swimming and boating.

2. Essential Functions:
· Actively supervise swimming activities in various settings including waterfront and/or pool.
o Maintain constant surveillance of the pool or area/body of water, know/review all emergency procedures, and respond to emergency situations immediately.
o Know, understand, and consistently communicate policies and guidelines for the pool, body of water or aquatic feature.
o Ensure that secondary job responsibilities do not interfere with actively supervising assigned zone while guarding.
o Perform opening and closing procedures daily to ensure pool is meeting state and local requirements.
· Actively supervise and facilitate watercraft activities that may include canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, sailing, or motor boating.
o Know, understand, and consistently communicate aquatic policies and guidelines while facilitating watercraft activities.
o While facilitating watercraft activities, actively supervise all participants and respond to any emergency or non-emergency situations that arise.
o Instruct proper watercraft skills to participants and camp counselors as necessary during activities.
· Be a role model to campers and counselors in your attitude and behavior.
o Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
o Set a good example to campers and staff in regard to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
o Ensure that aquatic program areas are clean, organized, and free of litter.
· Maintain current certifications and be up to date on trainings as required by the program and camp location.
o Maintain current certifications in Lifeguarding and Oxygen administration.
o Maintain Waterfront Lifeguarding (if guarding waterfront swimming or watercraft activities.)
o Attend scheduled in-service trainings as scheduled by manager.
o Attend site / activity specific training as needed to safely and effectively facilitate waterfront and watercraft activities.
· Support camp outside of aquatic programing when aquatic activities are not being offered or during emergencies.
o Perform first aid when necessary and complete appropriate incident and first aid reports.
o Respond appropriately when camp emergency action plans are initiated.
o Know and understand ALL emergency procedures associated with the camp program. You will be looked to as a leader during emergency procedures.
o Fill in for camp counselors when needed.
o Support camp check in and out process.

3. Relationships:
This position reports to the Program Director who reports to the Senior Program Director or Executive Director. The incumbent may take work direction from a Camp Manager or Assistant Camp Director. The incumbent interacts regularly with camp staff, campers, volunteers, and families. This position involves interaction with individuals and communities of a diverse background.

4. Qualifications:
Required
· Minimum age of 16.
· Current nationally accredited lifeguard certification (applicable for body of water being guarded). The Y may help coordinate this certification, but it will be required before the incumbent can perform duties as a lifeguard.
· Certification required within 45 days of hire: Oxygen Administration
· Physically perform all skills required of a camp lifeguard.
· Ability to learn basic watercraft skills such as carrying and paddling.
· Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere in the zone of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodations.
· See and observe all sections of an assigned zone of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodations.
· Demonstrated ability to recognize swimmers and paddlers in need of assistance.
· Demonstrated ability to recognize, respond and remedy unsafe situations.
· Ability to communicate with all ages and levels of swimmers
· Ability to work with diverse populations and ages.
· Dedicated to member safety and the mission and philosophy of the YMCA


5. Work Conditions:
· Ability to pass lifeguard water test.
· Must be able to remain alert with no lapses of consciousness in a cold or warm environment with air temperatures of up to 90 degrees or higher.
· Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods.
· Ability to perceive, identify and respond to signs of distress.
· Ability to recognize and react calmly and effectively in hazardous/dangerous situations.
· Observe all areas of the water with clear vision.
· Perform all needed rescues and survival skills.
· Be able to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue, including swimming quickly, supporting adult body weight while swimming as far as 50 feet, and removing adult body weight from the water or carry / paddle a watercraft.
· Communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
· Ability to concentrate for long periods of time.
