Principal Online Instructional Designer (Instructional Technology Consultant)



The Principal Online Instructional Design is a highly collaborative position that will work closely with IU Bloomington School of Public Health (SPH) faculty, staff, administrators, and other instructional technology units around the university to support online instructional content design and development. This position requires familiarity with instructional multimedia production and post-production workflows. The Principal Online Instructional Designer works with a high degree of autonomy to ensure that pedagogically appropriate online tools are used to enhance the educational experience for SPH online students. Our team supports a large digital portfolio with a wide range of digital assets production and online offerings, including graduate and undergraduate courses, nationally and regionally funded grants, professional development content supporting the public health workforce, continuous improvement initiatives, and staff/faculty development initiatives. In addition, the Principal Online Instructional Designer also creates and delivers professional development workshops and collaborates in the research and publication of original work in peer-reviewed academic/practitioner journals and presentations at professional conferences.

Job Summary





  • Consults with faculty in planning, developing, initiating, testing, and using new and innovative approaches to learning, instruction, and assessment; recommends appropriate technologies in developing course materials, delivery mechanisms, and course/instructor/student assessments to support effective teaching.

  • Serves as an information resource to faculty both in creating and conducting online courses; conducts individual, small group, and large audience training sessions; develops, designs, and prepares workshop materials; supports faculty learning communities for key instructional technology initiatives.

  • Provides instructional technology expertise and coordinates on selected initiatives as assigned; implements instruction design practices, procedures, and workflows in conformance with strategic and operational plans.

  • Assists in the development of multimedia assets, such as web pages, videos, mashups, and audio presentations, for online courses.

  • Contributes to quality assurance testing and requirements gathering for course management, portfolio, and collaboration systems.

  • Researches and stays up-to-date with instructional design literature and other areas of related expertise.

EDUCATION



Required



  • Bachelor's degree (preferably in computer science, instructional technology/design, or related field)


Preferred



  • Master's degree

WORK EXPERIENCE



Preferred



  • Some experience in instructional development and/or instructional technology consulting, and/or training, and/or teaching (face-to-face or online) or providing instructional design with online instructional technology, preferably in a higher education context

Working Conditions / Demands



This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus.
