Job Description:

The Alternative Fuels Engineer will be responsible for supporting the activities of the Global Sustainability team related to global maritime decarbonization efforts focusing on alternative fuels. This includes methanol, biofuels, ammonia, the application of fuel cells, e-fuel technologies, and other alternative fuels, along with various energy sources. hydrogen and ammonia. This will include safety items associated with production, transportation, and storage. The Alternative Fuels Engineer will support the team in scaling up existing services, capitalizing on new service or product opportunities, and identifying new revenue streams in their field of expertise.


What You Will Do:

  • Maintain a solid understanding of emerging regulatory frameworks related to marine and offshore decarbonization.
  • Understand the role that alternative fuels play in the industry's decarbonization efforts and support the department's activities in this sector.
  • Support ABS Sustainability Centers on queries regarding alternative fuels and the implications for onboard arrangements.
  • Support the department's different projects, services, and other activities.
  • Interact with clients to perform services offered by the Global Sustainability team.
  • Establish and manage client projects.
  • Update and inform the Global Sustainability team on regulatory changes and their impact on ABS business.
  • Conduct seminars and workshops and attend industry events and conferences related to hydrogen and its applications on marine vessels and offshore units.
  • Contribute to authoring ABS publications and thought leadership documents.
  • Participate in industry societies to develop and enhance technical capabilities.

What You Will Need:


Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree (or recognized equivalent) in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or other related discipline.
  • Masters in a relevant field preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant engineering experience with maritime alternative fuels.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of industry trends regarding alternative fuels (including hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol) production, transportation, and storage
  • Knowledge of alternative fuels (including hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol) for use as a fuel
  • Knowledge of fuel cell technology and application
  • Knowledge of existing and emerging technologies, including engines, fuel, propulsion systems, and power generation technologies in maritime applications, is a plus.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills both orally and in writing.
  • Must be able to travel.
  • Must be capable of presenting and working with clients.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management System or ability to learn it.

Reporting Relationships:


Reports directly to the Manager of the Houston Sustainability Center.


Environmental Conditions:


Work will normally be performed in an air-conditioned office environment. Occasionally, the candidate will be required to visit manufacturing plants, remote field sites, or go aboard marine vessels or structures. Work will be non-manual, but the candidate must be able to walk and climb among equipment and structures. Occasionally may have to lift between 5-15 pounds.
