The Controller position is a newly opened opportunity within a 60-year-old full service regional bank with a track record and commitment to the growth and success of the people they employee and the communities they service. Based out of the company's headquarters in Aberdeen, MD, this individual will work directly in supporting the CFO on managing the Financial and Accounting department and operations. The Controller position will offer a base salary in the $130,000 range plus annual bonus, full benefits package, and a company culture committed to personal growth and development. This is an excellent opportunity for accounting professionals with 5 plus years of experience including management exposure who are ready to fast track their careers into a Controller level position. Ideal candidates will have strong working knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting compliance, preferably some experience with financial services, banking, or related industry sectors whether direct or through public accounting engagements. Candidates must be willing and able to work on-site daily in the company's Aberdeen HQ.

Controller Job Description
  • Responsible for managing the Finance and Accounting Departments daily operations including general ledger, internal financial reporting, filing of regulatory reports, and the preparation of the consolidated annual budget.
  • With the assistance of the CFO, the Controller serves as a key liaison for the banks external auditors, prepares quarterly and year-end financials and accompanying footnote and MD&A disclosures, and coordinates preparation of annual tax return and ensures quarterly tax payments are remitted in a timely fashion.
  • Responsible to maintain, control, analyze, and report on accounts of various degrees of complexity, according to generally accepted accounting principles and regulatory principles. Responsible for administrating the access levels of the general ledger and other accounting systems.
  • Supervise Finance and Accounting Department staff.
  • Primary point person for all internal and external audits.
  • Oversees the completion of the CECL model.
  • Establish, update and maintain departmental polices for efficiency and compliance.
  • In collaboration with the Senior Financial Analyst, process investment portfolio trades in the Lightning trade system, complete internal trade tickets and checklists, and ensure all necessary documentation is obtained, reviewed, and approved.
  • Ensure the entries associated with the self-funded health insurance program are properly recorded and the program properly administered during the month, including a periodic review of the IBNR reserve.
  • Maintains the general ledger chart of accounts.
  • Responsible for accounting related to BOLI, SERP, pension plan, and other post-retirement benefit plans.
  • Monitors all accounts payable for accuracy of general ledger and ensures timely payments.
  • Ensure all needed collateral reports are prepared, reviewed and submitted to the Federal Reserve Bank (FRB) for the discount window borrowing facility and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta (FHLBA) for the primary borrowing facility (QCRs).
  • Ensure adequate segregation of duties within the Finance and Accounting Department for all functions, and ensure controls are properly documented and operating.
  • Obtain payroll system reports and reconcile to the Banks general ledger records.
  • Back up the CFO on OptionTracker stock option software.
  • In collaboration with the CFO and the Senior Financial Analyst, gain proficiency on the ProfitStar ALM/Budgeting/Forecasting model. Assist with the reviewing, testing, and documenting of the model.
  • Assists with the preparation of the quarterly ALCO package.
  • Gathers relative financial data and oversees the timely preparation of periodic regulatory reports for the Bank.
  • Reconciles outstanding stock count to the Banks records.
  • Oversee operations and functions of the Accounting Department to include ensuring public funds review, daily reconciliations, accounts payable and funds management.
  • Reviews general ledger reports daily, ensuring balances, postings, and net changes are reasonable.
  • Oversee new fixed asset setup, disposals, and modifications on the system. In addition, review the monthly depreciation accounting run.
  • Review and maintain accrued and prepaid expense items.
  • Maintain and ensure departmental and Bank-wide reconciliations are completed and submitted for review, for all general ledger accounts.
  • Ensure the month end closing process is completed in a timely fashion.
  • The analyses of financial trends are reviewed monthly with the Chief Financial Officer prior to the preparation of the Board package.
  • Ensure the monthly income tax accrual is completed each month.
  • Ensure quarterly estimated tax payments and annual tax payments are made in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate with the Banks tax return provider to prepare the deferred tax entries.
  • Ensures back-up withholding remittances are made accurately and timely and that the Bank files the annual tax return accurately and timely.
  • Prepares the quarterly and year-end financials and accompanying footnote disclosures and MD&A for review by external audit team.
  • Analyze and consolidate departmental operating budgets as part of the annual budget process.
  • Collaborate with the CFO to coordinate the annual regulatory-required BOLI review with the Board.
  • Collaborate with the CFO to prepare the annual investment broker and annual municipal investment due diligence review.
  • Collaborate with the CFO and Board Executive Secretary to prepare and review the annual proxy statement, the annual report to stockholders and prepare materials for the annual stockholder meeting.
  • Provides support, guidance, and problem-solving assistance to other areas of the Bank as requested.
  • Attends bank meetings as required.
  • Assists CFO with various projects as assigned.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as required and assigned.

Controller Job Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • CPA or MBA preferred but not required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of accounting experience with increasing responsibilities or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities for this role.
  • Experience with financial services, banking, or related sectors whether direct or through public account.
  • Experience with the following: GAAP, Financial Reporting, SEC Reporting, Regulatory Reporting, and leading a company or bank through internal and external audits and regulatory examinations.
  • Ability to work onsite at the company's HQ based in Aberdeen, MD.
