Job Summary

Work across campus units to connect and coordinate family and community engagement initiatives for the Center for Family & Community Engagement. Collaborate with campus and community partners to match community needs to campus supports, research initiatives, and services that motivate and support pre-college students, their families, and community organizations in the pursuit of interests and future careers in science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics, and medicine. This Center is a part of the Institute for Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access.



Duties & Responsibilities



Collect, maintain, and share details about community and family engagement opportunities and resources in STEAMM, providing a centralized repository of events and curriculum resources.


  • Maintain a working knowledge of STEAMM engagement efforts in departments and student groups across campus. Share resources and best practices across programs.

  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to identify event goals, themes, and target audience.

  • Act as a primary contact for community organizations locally and across the state seeking partnerships to improve opportunity, access, and diversity in STEAMM.

  • Work with FACES leadership and Board of Advisors to facilitate collaborations between unit leaders, K-12 educators, and community organizations to develop accessible and inclusive STEAMM programs that benefit K-12 students, especially students from underrepresented populations.

  • Coordinate and oversee internal and external communications about events and activities, working closely with Engineering Marketing and Communications as well as other campus communicators (e.g. website, social media, Illini GivePulse, Teams, newsletters).

Recruit, train, and manage faculty, staff, and students to actively and safely participate in community engagement programs.

  • Train and direct a small, permanent staff. Identify temporary staffing needs; recruit and select staff, assign and coordinate their work, train, and manage their performance, working closely with Engineering and partnering units' HR processes.

  • Direct and coordinate administrative support functions; setting performance standards, analyzing work requirements, and establishing operating guidelines for support staff, including student interns.

  • Collaborate across partnering units to recruit, train, and support a pool of well-trained and reliable graduate and undergraduate student volunteers to provide mentorship and teaching assistance to K-12 students involved in these engagement programs.

  • Connect STEAMM faculty and staff with College of Education experts to develop curriculum and programming for community engaged partnerships.

Manage FACES annual budget, grant development, and other fundraising.

  • Authorize fiscal transactions and keep management informed of overall financial position: work with FACES leadership team, the central Engineering business office, and business offices distributed across other campus units to review and monitor fiscal transactions and accounts and to make budget projections.

  • Work with FACES leadership team and the Affiliated Offices of Advancement to help fund engagement efforts and provide reports and requests to funders.

  • Stay abreast of Illinois- and agency-specific grant submission and reporting procedures.

  • Work closely with FACES partners and leadership team to write and submit grant proposals and aid faculty with grant submissions to obtain engagement support.

Work with leadership team to coordinate engagement program research and assessment. Identify and implement improvements to these programs based on evidence.

  • Facilitate cross-unit efforts to establish some common measures of success.

  • Maintain data collection and storage to allow for easy reporting of common impact numbers.

  • Provide requested information to the campus Public Engagement Office for Carnegie Public Engagement certification.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.

  • A total of three (3) years (36 months) of work experience in community engagement and/or K-12 educational programs.

  • Demonstrated experience facilitating collaborative initiatives involving diverse needs and interests.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or Master's degree in science, engineering, education, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated experience managing budgets.

  • Demonstrated experience in grant, proposal, and report writing.

  • Demonstrated community engagement experience in the local area and/or under-resourced communities in Illinois.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, culturally sustaining pedagogy, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.

  • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.

  • Skill in analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems.

  • Skill in scheduling events, programs, and activities, as well as the work of others.

  • Skill in oral and written communication.

  • Ability to adjust actions in relation to others' actions.

  • Ability to develop goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish work.

  • Ability to work effectively with staff, the public, and outside constituency groups.

  • Ability to effectively plan, delegate, and supervise the work of others.

  • Ability to utilize various computer software packages, such as Microsoft Office, Discord, Asana, etc.

  • Ability to work independently and exercise judgment in order to be able to analyze and investigate a variety of questions or problems.

  • Ability to analyze and develop guidelines, procedures and systems.

  • Ability to occasionally travel out of town within the state of Illinois.

  • Ability to work flexible and extended hours, including some weekends.

  • Ability to remain in a stationary position for periods of time.

  • Ability to move boxes of program supplies weighing upwards of 10 lbs.


Appointment Information


This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5002 - Program Coordinator position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close date. The minimum salary for this position is $60,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The employee hired into this position will work primarily onsite with some remote opportunities. Work authorization is not available for this position.
