Job Description:

Position Summary
The Lab Assistant II performs phlebotomy, receives, retrieves, and processes specimens for in-house and reference laboratory analysis including electronically checking specimens into the LIS system and reviewing orders for errors. Records temperatures and performs other maintenance as required on analyzers. Performs a variety of waived and moderately complex tests. Performs a variety of specimen collection techniques including but not limited to venipuncture and nasopharyngeal swabs from patients for laboratory procedures used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Exercises professional judgment in order to recognize, prioritize, and facilitate varying test requests and workload in efficient manner.

Essential Job Functions/Accountabilities
Independently receives and performs routine and moderate complexity laboratory analyses on clinical specimens, quality controls, and proficiency testing specimens in one or more sections of the laboratory. Properly utilizes LIS.

Communicates critical results. Works cooperatively with reference lab, courier, and other departments within our system.

Operates, checks, and maintains instrumentation. Recognizes problems with quality control and test procedures and takes appropriate action to ensure quality clinical information.

Ensures the cleanliness of the work area and adequate supplies for efficient laboratory operations. Receives and processes specimens for send-outs to reference laboratories.

All other duties not specifically assigned.

Position Requirements
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent required.

Experience:
Minimum of 1 year experience as a Laboratory Assistant /MLT/MLS/MT; or currently enrolled in an Associates or Bachelors degree in laboratory science.

Technical Skills:
Manual dexterity sufficient to operate and troubleshoot sophisticated equipment, identify and correct technical problems, Ability to work under stress, communicate test results to physicians, nursing units, and/or other authorized personnel. Assumes accountability for demonstrating behaviors consistent with the CCOC policy, Use of computers, Ability to effectively interact with populations of patients / staff with an understanding of their needs for self-respect and dignity. Demonstrates annual successful completion of all regulatory required testing related competencies.

Certifications/Licenses/Registrations:
Phlebotomy Certificate or Medical Laboratory Technician / Medical Laboratory Scientist license.
