Duties & Responsibilities:

Position Description:

VIAVI Solutions (West Henrietta) is devoted to the design and manufacture of optical components, refractive and diffractive, having micro-structured optical surfaces for use in the efficient control and distribution of light for applications in illumination and display. An important segment of the company’s business relies on dry etch processing and the transfer of grayscale patterns from organic masking layers to inorganic optical substrates with high precision, uniformity, and optical quality.

The dry etch process engineer will work in a cleanroom environment leading the development of novel grayscale etch processes as well as new and on-going production work. The candidate will a) operate, qualify and maintain VIAVI’s dry etch tools and associated equipment within the clean room and b) develop, characterize, sustain and improve dry etch processes for high precision pattern transfer for a variety of optical components. Previous experience with photolithography and dry etching (RIE in particular) would be especially valuable. Project work will include a mix of research, development and manufacturing.

Main Responsibilities:


  • Operate and maintain dry etch and associated process equipment.

  • Develop and characterize new or improved dry etch processes as required.

  • Operate and utilize surface-profile characterization tools.

  • Increase knowledge of dry etch techniques for various materials and develop understanding of capabilities and limitations.

  • Provide input to sales department, upon request, on RFQ’s having complex or unusual deliverables.

  • Assume lead on projects as necessary.

  • Carry out work on developmental or related projects and participate in the development of new or enhanced manufacturing processes as assigned.

  • Keep accurate records and document procedures and processes in accordance with VIAVI’s Quality Management System.

  • Prepare reports as needed.

  • Work with vendors for pre- and post-process operations related to on-going projects.

  • Continually seek and suggest ways to increase yield, throughput, and/or efficiency to improve operations and lower costs.

Pre-Requisites / Skills / Experience Requirements:

  • BS/MS level candidate in Engineering, Physics, Materials Science or Optics.

  • Microelectronics experience is preferred

  • Team player with interest in process development work.

  • Must enjoy ‘hands-on’ as well as desk work. 

  • Familiar with clean room ‘best practices’.

  • Training and experience, preferably hands-on, in vacuum science, including care, operation and maintenance of mechanical and turbomolecular vacuum pumps.

  • Training and experience, preferably hands-on, in dry etch processing, using at least reactive-ion etching (RIE), for MEMS, micro-optic, or microelectronic applications.

  • Familiar with microelectronic and/or MEMS device processing techniques, electronic circuits and components, rf/dc power supplies, etc.

  • Familiar with optical materials, optical components (lenses, mirrors, diffraction gratings), lasers, spectrometers, optical interferometers (or concept of interferometry), optical microscopes and stylus profilometer. 

  • Exercise of care, patience and attention to detail to produce consistent results of high quality.

  • Ability to communicate results in a clear and concise manner.

  • Effectiveness at working individually as well as part of a team.

  • Ability to clearly document and archive work.

  • Attention to safety and safe working conditions.

Job Posting Pay Range:

78,400

to

145,600
