This position is an excellent opportunity for a highly skilled professional with a passion for philanthropy and expertise in prospect research and management. Join us in advancing the mission of Harvard Business School through strategic donor engagement and impactful research. Under the guidance of the Senior Director of Prospect and Development Research, the Associate Director of Prospect and Development Research will play a crucial role in a collaborative team dedicated to prospect discovery and research. This role focuses on proactively identifying potential philanthropic prospects and providing comprehensive research to support a donor-centered, data-driven fundraising department at Harvard Business School.

In collaboration with the Senior Director, the Associate Director will revise, implement, and manage lead tracking, prospect pipeline, and related analytical functions for HBS.
  • Apply expertise in rating methodologies and analysis to accurately and efficiently assess complex financial documents, real estate, and other wealth indicators for determining HBS Capacity Ratings.
  • Conduct valuations of private companies, options, hedge funds, venture capital, and private equity to ascertain wealth. Utilize prospecting tools like data screening and modeling to analyze targeted groups for qualifying potential prospects.
  • Work effectively with systems administrators or programmers to conceptualize, develop, and deploy database resources, maximizing data utility and insights. Analyze complex data to address business queries and present findings visually.
  • Perform detailed research using public, proprietary, purchased, or leased databases, and other resources to identify potential donors and funding sources.
  • Interpret biographic, business, and financial information on individuals, corporations, and foundations based on the University's fundraising strategies and priorities.
  • Contribute to planning and implementing comprehensive, proactive prospect identification and management strategies.
  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of major gifts fundraising, preferably within a sophisticated higher education fundraising context.
  • Maintain and manage prospect information and data systems, creating relevant policies, procedures, and training materials.
  • Display initiative, creativity, effectiveness, and flexibility with a proven track record of accomplishment.
  • Exhibit expertise in project management, consistently meeting challenging deadlines.
  • Independently handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • This role is responsible for other duties as assigned.


Basic Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree is required
  • A minimum of 7 years of overall work experience is required, including at least 3 years in direct research and prospect management within a not-for-profit development environment.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel (formulas, complex functions, and shortcuts), PowerPoint (data visualization and presentations), and relational database software programs.
  • Experience with Advance or other fundraising CRM databases is required.
  • Demonstrated experience with managing and manipulating large data sets, including proficiency with pivot tables is required.


Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Strong understanding of donors' rights, along with an acute awareness of the distinction between public and private information; scrupulous attention to discretion and confidentiality.
  • Advanced research, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to locate and interpret biographic, philanthropic, and financial information from various sources.
  • A strong "can-do," positive, and flexible demeanor.


Additional Information

This is a hybrid position which we consider to be a combination of remote and onsite work at our Boston, MA based campus. HBS expects all staff to be onsite a minimum of 3 days per week and departments provide onsite coverage Monday - Friday. Specific hours and days onsite will be determined by business needs and are subject to change with appropriate advanced notice.
