EPRI provides thought leadership, industry expertise, and collaborative value to help the electricity sector identify issues, technology gaps, and broader needs that can be addressed through effective research and development programs for the benefit of society.
This is a great opportunity to lead a growing area in EPRI, and an area increasingly important to the energy transition. The electricity markets area has been a high priority research activity at EPRI over many years, with significant growth in the past 3-5 years. This role is for a leader in this area, leading with both technical and management responsibilities. Research on the evolution of electricity markets to enable economically efficient, reliable, and equitable operation across energy, ancillary grid services, transmission, and supply capacity is a primary focus. Research that includes evolution of market clearing software, simulation work to assess the efficiency of system changes, operational strategies, and market design changes are also a key priority. Research focus also includes the integration of emerging technologies onto the grid and its markets, the design of markets under future 2030+ scenarios, and evolution of markets where customers can take part.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Works alongside EPRI sales staff in Member Services and EPRI International to support member/client needs
Support cross-cutting initiatives developed through EPRI Board of Directors, Research Advisory Committee, and EPRI Executives
Represent EPRI in the area of electricity markets in various events and forums, ranging from detailed technical discussions to high level talks
Help organize workshops with EPRI and external speakers and discussants and facilitate meetings with EPRI advisors
Support area leadership in engaging with senior management at EPRI and member companies to set research strategy and develop new ideas
Coordinates with other EPRI teams and areas to ensure electricity market issues are well understood and represented, including support of work in other areas
Performs original research including modeling and analysis related to electricity markets, and authors or contributes to technical papers, white papers and short insight documents
Responsible for developing/implementing the R&D deployment strategy for the area(s)
Responsible for management of one or more technical programs
Responsible for technical and financial results produced by the program(s)
Accountable for program level succession strategies, hiring of staff, performance management, and development planning
Identifies the most qualified internal staff and contractor teams to complete the work. Selects contractors, frames statements of work
Directs the work of the team to assure technical and financial milestones are met
Responsible for employee selection, performance management, and development planning
Receives assignments in the form of objectives and determines how to use resources to meet schedules and goals
Provides guidance to staff within the latitude of company policy
May be responsible for the program level advisory structure
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Proven leadership and management capability overseeing an R&D Program
Responsible for funding, spending and workforce planning in program area
Directly responsible for leading multiple staff including goal setting and performance management
Proven people management experience with a strong grasp of the skills related to recruitment, hiring, people development, and retention
Works directly with member advisors to ensure member engagement and guidance
Presents, with a high degree of technical credibility, Program content, value and research results at member locations and with member leadership
May present program activities to the Sector Council
Has working knowledge of the various Sector programs, strategy and values, and aligns Program activities to support cross program participation
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ideal Candidate:
Has established relationships with primary advisors to the research area, including technical and management staff at North American ISOs and RTOs, individuals working at utilities that work in RTO policy, trading, or market operations departments, and the Independent Power Producer community
Has detailed knowledge of the workings of electricity markets, particularly North American ISO markets, as well as the theory behind market design and operations
Relationship with broader stakeholders including regulatory bodies and trade groups is desired
Knowledge and relationships with electricity markets and stakeholders outside of North America a plus
Education & Years of Experience:
Advanced degree in a technical field or equivalent experience required
Graduate or PhD in technical field is a plus
10+ years of professional experience at or in collaboration with energy utilities, ISOs, or RTOs
