JOB PURPOSE:Stanford University has an immediate opening for an Alternate Format Specialist in the Office of Accessible Education (OAE). This position will be in the Division of Student Affairs, which supports many student experiences outside the classroom in our residences, community centers, student organizations, health center, career education center, and more. The mission of the Office of Accessible Education (OAE) is to promote an accessible and inclusive environment for all students with disabilities. We also strive to promote the inclusive environment they need to experience full membership in our diverse Stanford community.The Senior Alternate Format & Braille Specialist is responsible for leading and managing the remediation of complex course materials, including braille transcription, across various subjects like STEM, music, and foreign languages. This role involves working closely with faculty and students to understand their needs, creating customized workflows to overcome accessibility challenges, and ensuring content is remediated accurately and on time using specialized software. Additionally, the position includes training and guiding team members, developing new methods for accessible content, and overseeing the production process to maintain high-quality standards. In this role, you will:
Independently develop and manage complex, highly technical course remediation projects involving technical content (e.g., STEM, music, and foreign languages) requiring extensive student and course knowledge.Take responsibility for assigned classes by proactively communicating with instructional staff to establish access to course material, communicating with student(s) regarding priorities and specific needs, and creating tasks.Play an active role in planning and consulting with faculty to determine student access barriers for particular courses. Develop plans and workflows for addressing documentation access barriers in those courses.Actively liaise with instructors to discuss course materials, potential limitations with different remediation options; consult to determine the best alternative format for students that conveys the course content.Provide direction and workflow for complex courses. Determine overall standards for highly technical materials specific to the student and remediation.Develop new methodologies for creating accessible technology, braille and tactile graphics in different fields of student study (STEM, music, and foreign language) and as new technologies and efficiencies emerge.Coordinate production process, develop and document production specifications, and select appropriate production tools.Perform complex remediations across a wide-variety of course subject matter using job-required software applications and in-depth knowledge of principles and practices of remediating visual and print communications.Remediate complex content in a wide variety of subjects involving highly specialized knowledge or technical content; including Nemeth (math braille), foreign language braille, and Unified English Braille (UEB); tactile graphics; HTML and MathML with LaTeX for STEM content; foreign language HTML; and music XML.Train team members on the use of new and existing workflows, tools, and best practices in remediating course materials.Develop resources, testing, training, and on-going support to staff to help achieve team goals with efficiency to meet the time-sensitive needs of the students.May manage team member(s).
To be successful in this role, you will bring:
A bachelor's degree in related field and three years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects or content requiring extensive subject matter/client knowledge.Experience in braille transcription of STEM materials.Advanced knowledge of job-required software applications.Excellent organizational skills and ability to effectively resolve complex problems.Ability to manage changing priorities, deadlines, and customer needs.Able to work on multiple projects simultaneously.Ability to perform detailed work with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.Demonstrated experience leading and training other staff.Strong organizational and communication (both written and verbal) skills.In-depth understanding and knowledge of industry standards, trends, and technical knowledge.Ability to work effectively with others as part of a team.
In addition, preferred requirements include:
Excellent organizational skills including an ability to oversee a wide variety of activities, to define pitfalls, to propose and implement effective solutions, while being able to set and re-adjust often competing priorities.High level of energy, flexibility, and the ability to work independently.
This position is remote eligible.Able to work evenings and weekends, as needed.

This role is open to candidates anywhere in the United States. Stanford University has five Regional Pay Structures. The compensation for this position will be based on the location of the successful candidate.The expected pay range for this position is $86,000 to $118,000 per annum for remote positions.The expected pay range for this position is $102,000 to $118,000 per annum for Stanford Work Location positions.Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.
