We are seeking a full-time EMC Engineering Technician in our Olathe, KS location. In this role you will be working with a fast-paced EMC team that is responsible for the testing of a full complement of Garmin avionics systems that help pilots fly, including critical systems like autopilots in many different types of aircraft from single engine aircraft through commuter aircraft as well as helicopter and EVTOLs. EMC testing is a critical role in the development and certification of new products to market. You will be an individual contributor and/or working in a team responsible for taking all the aircraft avionics systems and creating an integrated avionics bench that simulates the aircraft installation and flight operations. You will be part of the team that will perform testing in state-of-the-art brand new anechoic and reverberation EMC chambers that can generate high levels of RF to simulate RF exposures seen by the aircraft and you will run lightning testing on the systems to emulate transients seen when an aircraft is struck by lightning. On-the-job training will be provided to suitable candidates without any direct prior experience.
Essential Functions
Execute plan made by an engineer/more experienced technician, work is closely supervised by an engineer or more experienced technician, and follow specific, detailed instructions
Perform/support testing at an outside facility or Olathe as directed by Engineer or another Technician onsite
Create simple plans/reports or provide contribution to larger complex plans/reports
Communicate status of work clearly providing visibility to Engineer or more experienced technician
Work with factory or Engineering to ATE equipment and document any findings
Ability to construct setups, create qualification plans and reports, and execute tests for small system/product with assistance
Able to work as part of a team to assist in the setup, run, and completion of test plans and reports for a large, integrated system
Able to read and follow schematics and layout drawings to identify solder and assembly problems and correct problems independently or with assistance
Understand system interconnects and wiring practices, able to diagnose and correct connection and wiring problems, and able to create system wiring diagrams with assistance
Able to prepare and execute electrical rework and software updates on lab prototypes
Track lab equipment and coordinate with Cal lab
Author test set up documents with some supervision
Basic Qualifications
2 year Electronics/Electrical Technology degree OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
Capable of applying test processes and methods to verify design and products performance
Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills and works with a sense of urgency
Understands importance of thoroughly documenting work in an organized manner and understands Garmin's Mission Statement and Quality Policy
Able to work professionally/in a positive respectful manner with all other Garmin associates and able to work in a collaborative team environment to achieve goals
Excellent concentration and attention to detail with outstanding work efficiency and accuracy
Capable of learning new skills and concepts and applying them in new situations.
Be proactive to help others in the group during any spare bandwidth Willing and able to share information and ideas freely and positively
Ability to perform debugging with supervision
Can execute simple (ex. Appliance level) product test plans and provide detailed test reports Familiarity with WORD. EXCEL, and VISIO/AutoCAD
Must possess the ability to: bend, twist and lift up to 50 lbs. and team lift up to 100 lbs. while using safe lifting techniques; push/pull test equipment on wheeled, moveable racks of up to 400 lbs.; stand for extended periods of time, climb and utilize ladders to connect cables; and walk long distances throughout the facility
Extended hours and weekend work may be required situationally, to support critical projects Able to travel for short trips as needed
Desired Qualifications
Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5)
Possess a general understanding of Garmin Integrated Flight Deck (GIFD) including the general role that each product has in the GIFD
Familiar with DO-160 or similar test standards Prior EMC or RF related experience
