Funded by the Wu Tsai Neuroscience Institute at Stanford, the NeuroPlant team seeks a talented and motivated Research Scientist at 100% FTE for a 2 year fixed term (possibility for renewal). NeuroPlant uses animal behavior to identify chemicals made by medicinal plants to discover new entry points for the treatment of neurological and psychiatric disease. The desired candidate is independent, conscientious, and steeped in the principles of reproducible research and team science and has excellent written and oral communication skills. NeuroPlant has developed high-throughput quantitative behavioral studies and now seeks to invent approaches to link phytochemical ligands and their receptors using the model nematode Caenorhabitis elegans. The Research Scientist will join a research team that includes experts in neuroscience, plant genomics and chemistry, genomics, and high-throughput cell-based genetic screens and will be expected to lead a team, make original scientific contributions, develop novel protocols and procedures, and interpret and analyze results. The position requires a motivated and self-directed scientist who enjoys interdisciplinary research, crossing the boundaries of neuroscience, technology development, and plant and cell biology.

Qualifications

A Ph.D. or M.D. degree with several years of research experience in academia and/or industry is desired. A strong background in model organism genetics (arabidopsis, worms, flies, or fish) is essential and applicants seeking to learn neuroscience are especially welcome. Experience with quantitative behavioral studies, genomics, molecular tool development, and/or technology development is highly desirable. The successful candidate must be technically rigorous, possess strong organizational skills and enjoy working at the bench. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are imperative. The successful candidate will be appointed in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Physiology, reporting to Prof. Miriam B. Goodman and must be able to work both independently and collaboratively and will likely have additional roles in recruiting and training of postdoctoral fellows and graduate students recruited to expand the capacity of the entire research team.
