Job Description:

SUMMARY

The Immunization Branch of the California Department of Public Health provides leadership and support to public and private sector efforts to protect the population against vaccine-preventable diseases. The Vaccine Preventable Diseases Surveillance and Epidemiology Section of the Immunization Branch conducts statewide surveillance for influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and other respiratory viruses. The program liaises and coordinates with other CDPH programs, including the Coronavirus Control Branch (CCB), the Viral and Rickettsial Disease Laboratory (VRDL), and the Healthcare Associated Infections Program (HAI). External partners include local health departments, the California Emerging Infections Program (CEIP), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), laboratories and a variety of data submitters. 

The Epidemiologist will be responsible for maintaining, modernizing, and improving respiratory virus surveillance systems and reporting, with a focus on RSV surveillance.

Continuation of this position is contingent on annual renewal of grant funding.

Salary range is $85,824 – $110,000 annually depending on experience/qualifications. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS   


  • Develop and maintain code to clean, manage, and analyze a variety of respiratory virus surveillance data, including electronic laboratory reports, outpatient, inpatient, and mortality data.

  • Troubleshoot data and coding issues, improving routine analyses and process efficiency.

  • Contribute to respiratory virus data modernization initiatives.

  • Participate in analyzing weekly influenza, RSV, and other respiratory virus data.

  • Write weekly reports and create or produce other internal reports or data visualizations.

  • Interpret and draw conclusions from respiratory virus surveillance data for public health decision making.

  • Collaborate effectively in a team environment.

  • Coordinate and interact with state and local public health departments, laboratories, Communicable Disease (CD) Controllers and other health agencies.

  • Participate in the investigation of respiratory virus and other disease outbreaks as assigned. Assists with implementation of studies and analyses of data associated with these outbreaks; develop data entry, data management, data analysis and data presentation plans. 

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


  • Collaborate on design, implementation, analysis and interpretation of epidemiologic or biostatistical investigations of influenza, RSV, or other respiratory viruses. 

  • Creates presentations for statewide or local meetings, symposia, or conferences as assigned.

  • Perform other duties as directed by the supervisor.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS  


  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with public health and healthcare professionals and internal partners.

  • Ability to perform high-level data quality assessment with attention to detail.

  • Advanced programming, analytical and problem-solving skills.  

  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks, complete assignments in a timely and efficient manner, and work independently.

  • Knowledge and application of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements and protection of health information.

  • Fluency in spoken and written English. 

  • Adherence to departmental policies and procedures regarding attendance, leave, and conduct.

 Education/Experience Required


  • Completed master’s degree in public health in epidemiology or biostatistics or related field

  • At least 3 years of public health experience as an epidemiologist or biostatistician

  • Experience in programming and data analysis

  • Experience in coordinating complex projects

  • Advanced knowledge and use Statistical Analysis Software (SAS)

 Preferred


  • Experience programming in SAS Viya

  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Structured Query Language (SQL)

  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of R

  • Basic knowledge and use of data visualization software such as Tableau or R Shiny

Remote

The remote position has the possibility of occasional in-person work at the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Richmond. Supervisor/leadership will determine work schedule.

Must have functioning internet access at remote location.
