Epsilon Systems Solutions, Inc., is currently seeking a full-time Welder III in National City, CA.

Summary: Performs various welding processes to repair, modify and install various pipes, structures, foundations and fittings associated with shipboard hydraulic, pneumatic and water systems. Selects proper materials and requirements to perform welding functions. Fabricates and installs fixtures and jigs required for welding process alignments.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides welding support certified in Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG), Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG) and Gas Metal Arc Welding Pulse (GMAW-P) using 5356 filler wire.

  • Uses hand-welding or flame-cutting equipment to weld or join metal components or to fill holes, indentations, or seams of fabricated metal products.

  • Welds components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.

  • Ignites torches or starts power supplies and strike arcs by touching electrodes to metals being welded, completing electrical circuits.

  • Clamps, holds, tack-welds, heat-bends, grinds or bolts component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding.

  • Detects faulty operation of equipment or defective materials and notify supervisors.

  • Operates manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments, using processes such as gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, flux-cored arc, carbon arc, plasma arc, shielded metal arc, resistance welding, submerged arc welding and pipe welding.

  • Ensures shop safety and housekeeping are followed

  • Ensures all materials and equipment are properly and safely stored, protected, and maintained

  • Reports the status and progress of all work to the government supervisor

  • Alerts the government supervisor of the causes of work delays

  • Monitors the fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion of material.

  • Examines work pieces for defects and measure work pieces with straight edges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications.

  • Recognizes, set ups, and operates hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such as shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment.

  • Lays out, positions, aligns, and secures parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers.

  • Performs welding methods using a mirror.

  • Expertly performs all tasks required as a Welder.

  • Provides mentoring to junior craftsman.

  • Performs work outside of trade if necessary.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School/GED with Apprenticeship Diploma and additional vocational courses or technical school graduate; and/or military and/or civilian experience with welding operations in a repair department or shipyard or fabrication shop.

  • 5 years' experience as a welder.

  • Qualifies as a Welder/Workmanship Inspector in accordance with Epsilon Systems' Ship Repair Sector Work Instructions and welding procedures.

  • Must be able to understand and perform the basic set up, adjustment, and operation of various welding equipment and hand tools used in the trade.

  • Must be qualified in a minimum of 15 welding/brazing processes to include flux core welding.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain access to military and government installations and private shipyards

  • Ability to communicate effectively, work independently or in a group.

  • Ability to do basic math, i.e. add, subtract, divide and multiply.

  • Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Production welder experience while in the Navy or working as a civilian production welder supporting Navy ship repair or new construction

  • Completion of a formal course of vocational or Navy welding training and certification

  • Familiar with the requirements of NAVSEA Technical publications 248, 278 and 2035

Pay Range

  • The pay range for this is $24.00 to $36.00 per hour. This is a reasonable estimate for this role. Individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications such as skills, education and experience.

ADA Notifications:

  • Requires walking, reaching, sitting and concentration in the presence of occasional and loud noises

  • Able to move in narrow and restricted passageways, up/down steep and narrow ladders or stairways, and up and down antenna masts/yardarms (onboard ships).

  • Able to lift, carry and move objects up to 50 lbs. in weight.

  • Must have manual and finger dexterity; able to grasp, manipulate, assemble small objects.

  • Able to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.

  • Able to perceive and distinguish normal range of colors.

  • May be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to: hard hat, safety glasses/goggles, ear plugs/muffs, masks/respirators, safety vests, gloves and steel-toe boots.
