We are seeking a full-time Optical Engineer 2 to join our team in Fairport, NY. Our team passionately develops complex optical systems in the consumer electronics space using a combination of visual, camera, and/or illumination optics. In this role, you will be collaborating with a highly experienced Optical Engineering team that designs, implements, and verifies optical components, technologies, and systems.
Essential Functions
Proficient use of one or more optical simulation software tools (ex. ZEMAX, Code V, Light Tools, TracePro, etc.)
Develop moderately complex optical designs or perform simulations or analysis on moderately complex designs
Specify test plans to validate moderately complex optical systems to industry and Garmin product qualification requirements
Independently use optical test equipment
Perform preventative maintenance and coordinate periodic calibration of test equipment
Collect/organize optical test data and prepare documentation for communication of results
May perform as a technical leader or Project Engineer for small projects or sub projects as part of a greater project, following established procedures
Find technical root cause and suggest corrective action for given problems
Work with manufacturing partners to understand design impacts on manufacturability
Collaborate/add value through participation in design reviews
Provide reliable solutions to a variety of problems using sound problem-solving techniques
Estimate tooling, part costs, design time and level of effort for moderately complex optical designs
May provide optical engineering project oversight for projects of moderate complexity that may be derived from existing products
Manage basic tradeoffs between process, production, appearance, cost and performance
Serve as a mentor to less experienced optical engineers (Optical Engineer 1)

Basic Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Optical Engineering, Bachelor of Arts in Physics, or related field AND a minimum of 1 year relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
Demonstrated ability with application of design standards and procedures to develop moderately complex optical designs and simulations
Demonstrated ability with optical engineering tools (simulation and laboratory)
Knowledge of industry and product qualification tests
Demonstrated ability to prioritize and complete moderately complex tasks and projects
Knowledge of preferred part materials for basic part production/performance and optical manufacturing processes
Strong communication skills
Desired Qualifications
Previous work or internship experience with optics or optical system design for consumer or aviation products
