Land Surveyor Crew Chief

Thomas & Hutton has an opening for an experienced Survey Crew Chief to join our Survey Department in Greenville, SC.

Survey Crew Chiefs are responsible for directing crews of two or more people in successfully completing a variety of field assignments. It is a supervisory position that requires high impact decisions and directing the work of others while continuing to perform the same technical duties as other crew members. The work can be both mentally and physically challenging and must be performed in a wide range of conditions.

Typical duties include:
  • Understands the principles and methods used in performing a variety of types of surveys such as photo control surveys, state plane coordinate surveys, boundary surveys, construction surveys, as-built surveys and route/highway surveys.
  • Understands and adheres to proper field procedures regarding the care, cleaning, and use of a variety of surveying tools and equipment, including field radios.
  • Operates, checks, and performs basic field adjustments on rods, compass, transits, levels, tribrachs, theodolites, total stations, data collectors, and tripods.
  • Displays a strong understanding of trigonometry, geometry and algebra as related to traversing, inverse and intersection computations.
  • Performs horizontal and vertical traverse adjustments, area and quantity computations, and horizontal and vertical curve computations.
  • Understands when to use, how to obtain, and how to interpret control point records and data sheets, as well as locate points in the field.
  • Understands a wide variety of surveying field operation methods including but not limited to: traversing; triangulation; repeating observations and precision measurements using steel tapes and theodolites; construction layout methods and procedures.
  • Understands procedures for GPS
  • Creates, reduces, and checks orderly field notes for standard surveying operations such as but not limited to leveling, traversing, topographic mapping, construction layout, as-built surveys, boundary surveys, profile and cross-section surveys.
  • Reads and prepares plans. (i.e. site plans, boundary plans, highway plans, profiles and cross sections, horizontal and vertical curves, pipeline plans, foundation plans and developing existing and finished contours.
  • Displays basic knowledge of treatment practices for a variety of medical emergencies. Understands traffic control and safety procedures for surveying operations.
  • Understands ethics and the various technical standards of groups such as ALTA, NGS, NSPS, ACSM, BLM, and ASCE.
  • Demonstrates the ability to enter field data and produce positional information, using hand calculations or computer software (i.e. leveling, traversing, as-built surveys, topographic mapping).
  • Familiar with general applications of computer-aided drafting (CAD).
  • Demonstrates the ability to interact with client contacts, public and governmental agencies, field crew management.
  • Understands scheduling, equipment, and supplies management.
  • Understands and adheres to general company policies as they relate to field and office operations, office workflow procedures, and field and office problem-solving techniques. Also, understands proper record keeping, timekeeping and job charges.
  • Coordinates and supervises fieldwork, staking, and stake marking for a variety of standard types of surveys.
  • Assists in training field crew personnel.
  • Understands local and state land use regulations as they relate to lot site development.
  • Additional duties as necessary and/or required by supervisor.
Minimum Requirements:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.

Experience: Prior experience as a Survey Crew Chief preferred. Prior experience conducting boundary and topographic surveys required. Experience with Carlson SurvCE, Robotic total stations, and GPS equipment a plus.

Skills:

  • This position will require driving. A valid driver's license is required.
  • Working knowledge of the following equipment: rods, compass, transits, levels, tribrachs, theodolites, total stations, data collectors, and tripods.
  • Strong math skills
  • Written and verbal communication skills
  • The ability to perform strenuous physical activity in a wide range of temperatures and work environments.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in an environment that may contain venomous snakes and insects such as ticks, red bugs, wasps, bees, hornets, yellow jackets, etc.
  • Ability stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of temperatures.
  • Ability to climb hills and walk long distances.
  • Ability to traverse different types of terrain.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 75lbs.
  • Ability to interact both verbally and written
