The School of Engineering and Computing at Christopher Newport University invites applications for one or more full-time faculty position(s) in Computer Science, effective August 2025. Applicants must be committed to undergraduate education and demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching and engagement in scholarly work with undergraduate and Master's level graduate students. Tenure-track faculty are expected to develop and maintain a research program that leads to regular publications and has potential for external funding. Candidates who will engage and work with students from diverse backgrounds and who are committed to their success are encouraged to apply.
The teaching load for Assistant/Associate Professors (tenure-track, research emphasis) is 3-3, and for Lecturers/Instructors (non-tenure track, teaching emphasis) it is 4-4.
A doctorate in Computer Science or a related discipline with a computational focus, including Engineering, Information Science, or Physics, is required for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor or Lecturer. In some cases, exceptionally well-qualified candidates may be considered for appointment at a higher rank. ABD candidates who will not hold the doctorate by the time of appointment or candidates with a Master's Degree in any of the above mentioned fields will be considered for appointment at the rank of Instructor. Applicants from all areas of specialization will be considered.
Determinations for the level of position will be made at the time of offer, and will be subject to the search committee and Dean's recommendation.
The School of Engineering and Computing at Christopher Newport University employs 35 full-time faculty and staff who value collegiality and diversity and who collaborate closely across disciplines and ranks. Together we offer six undergraduate majors and a Master's program with a total of about 600 students. The School has a variety of laboratories in support of both teaching and research in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and machine learning, complex data analysis and simulation, communications, robotics, software engineering, astrophysics, and nuclear physics. Additionally, the new Science and Engineering Research Center, which will open in Spring 2026, will house a makerspace with a machine shop, a drone & robotics lab, a networking lab, as well as several new faculty/student research labs.
Our faculty have close relationships with technology companies and nearby federal labs such as the Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) and NASA Langley Research Center.
