Unit Mission Statement:

The mission of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science and William & Mary's Batten School of Coastal and Marine Sciences is to seek and broadly communicate knowledge in marine and coastal science to the Commonwealth of Virginia, the nation, and the world through research, education, and advisory service.


The Office of Finance is responsible for managing, forecasting, and analyzing the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) and William & Mary's Batten School of Coastal and Marine Sciences (Batten School) multi-year, multi-funding source operational and capital resources totaling more than $200M, of which $65M is managed annually along with over 300 active awards at any given time. This includes the establishment and communication of policies and procedures necessary to ensure the proper and efficient use of those resources by providing expert, high-impact, team-oriented service that provides appropriate guidance with precision and accuracy in a timely fashion with a courteous and professional attitude.


Position Summary:

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Senior Research Data Strategist, will lead the development, organization, and implementation of the data and analytics infrastructure for VIMS/Batten School. This position plays a pivotal role in enhancing research capabilities, operational efficiency, and strategic decision-making processes through advanced data management and analytics services. This role will work closely with the W&M Data & Analytics Team, a sub-group of the Data Governance Advisory Committee. This individual may have additional data roles such as Data User, Data & Analytics Lead, and Data Product Manager and work collaboratively on the evaluation and recommendation of data analytics and management capabilities. Key stakeholders and collaborators of this position within VIMS/Batten School include the Dean/Director, members of the senior leadership team, administrative council, and faculty. Collaborators within William & Mary include the VP for Research and CIO Offices.


Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:


  • Provides timely and actionable insights by leading the creation of analytic models for VIMS academic programs, research initiatives, and operational domains using both grant and non-grant data, focusing on key metrics that impact strategic planning and resource allocation.

  • Ensures that VIMS/Batten School data enables a transition to data-driven processes to be at the forefront of marine science innovation.

  • Develops impactful visualizations and reports to effectively communicate insights from contract and grant data, enhancing transparency around funding, project outcomes, and resource utilization.

  • Optimize the efficiency and reliability of the data pipeline through the implementation of best practices in data extraction, transformation, and loading techniques

  • Evaluate, recommend, and integrate data management and analytics software solutions, ensuring compatibility and cost-effectiveness within VIMS's IT ecosystem in conjunction with W&M Data & Analytics Team.

  • Supervises the Manager of Research and Data Analytics and designs and delivers training programs and workshops to empower VIMS/Batten School personnel to utilize the data analytics infrastructure and tools effectively.

Required Qualifications:



  • Master's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Extensive experience (typically 15+ years) in data management, analytics, or a similar role directly related to the position duties.

  • Expertise in ETL processes, data infrastructure design, report writing, and statistical modeling.

  • Strong knowledge of data visualization tools and techniques.

  • Exceptional data management skills.

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to present complex data insights to a variety of stakeholders.

  • Ability to lead training and capacity-building initiatives.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Doctoral degree in statistics, epidemiology, biostatistics, or a related quantitative field.

  • Extensive experience within a research or academic institution and using real-world data.

  • Experience with associative and predictive machine learning processes focused on real world, applied sciences and data systems commonly used in higher educational settings.

  • Experience managing grants and grant-funded research related to faculty operations.

Advertised Pay Range:

$105,000 and up. This position may also include a sign-on bonus of up to $20,000


Advertised Pay Range Statement:

All hiring rates are commensurate with relevant experience up to the advertised amount considering internal alignment.
