Job Summary:

About the Position:
This position is part of our Physical Plant Department within the Facilities Planning and Management Division at UW-Madison. This essential position supports Plant Management by overseeing a large diverse group of Operations & Maintenance staff, including trades in the 24/7/365 production of critical utilities (steam, chilled water, compressed air) for a world class research institution in a safe, reliable and efficient manner.

About the Physical Plant Department and the Heating & Cooling Plant:
Physical Plant is the largest FP&M organizational unit and is responsible for the operation and maintenance of campus buildings, grounds, and utilities. Design resources, construction by the trades, and specialized facilities services are available for departmental requests and remodeling projects on a fee-for-service basis.

The Charter Street Heating & Cooling Plant and the Walnut Street Heating & Cooling Plant supply steam, chilled water, compressed air, and electricity to the UW campus, as well as to UW Hospital & Clinics, the US Forest Service Forest Products Laboratories, and the Division of Veterans Affairs VA Hospital, and some other non-campus customers.

Our plant operators also coordinate with the West Campus Cogeneration facility (which produces electricity for Madison Gas and Electric customers) on steam and chilled water needs for heating and air-conditioning on campus.

The Division of Facilities Planning& Management (FP&M) is a full-spectrum service organization that builds, maintains, and operates the physical environment of UW-Madison in the university's education, research, and outreach activities. Responsibilities:

Oversees the safe, efficient, environmentally friendly, and cost effective operation and maintenance of systems, performs administrative duties, and supervises staff at campus Heating and Cooling plants to supply the campus with critical services.

  • 25% Supervises and directs plant operation
  • 10% Leads, mentors, and coaches plant staff to ensure safe, reliable, and uninterrupted utility production of critical services
  • 10% Manages schedules
  • 5% Monitors control systems and operations, watches for changes, and makes adjustments and repairs as necessary
  • 5% Assesses problems and takes corrective actions as appropriate to maintain critical plant operations
  • 5% Makes technical decisions, coordinates with other plants' production activities, performs hands-on mechanical maintenance, repairs, and adjustments, and inspects the work of staff and ensures optimum performance of critical equipment
  • 5% Plans, coordinates, and reviews plans for major plant repairs
  • 5% Monitors contractors and project status
  • 5% Trains operating personnel in use of the procedures
  • 5% Be available or assign others for consultation of plant operations, as needed, for a plant in operation 24/7 year-round
  • 20% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees

Education:

Preferred
H.S. Diploma

Qualifications:

Required:
-5 years minimum experience in Heating/Cooling Plant Supervising (with boiler, chiller, steam turbine operation & maintenance)
-Supervising an Operations and/or Maintenance staff of 3 or more people

Preferred:
-Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities of Supervising Steamfitter & Electrical Trades.
-Knowledge of Emerson DeltaV or similar digital control systems
-Effective Team Building Leader/Supervisor of a large (15+) diverse Heating/Cooling or Utility Plant Staff producing critical utilities 24/7/365
-Experience with State Heating/Cooling Plant projects
-Experience with CMMS (computerized maintenance management system)

License/Certification:

Required
Drivers License - Valid and Meets UW Risk Management Standards

Full Time: 100%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. The typical schedule is Monday through Friday 6:00AM to 2:30PM with occasional weekends and holidays. On-call availability (24 hours/day) is required for the position.

Minimum $100,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The minimum rate for this position is $100,000, but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
