Job Description:
The Partners Section of the Wildlife Division is primarily responsible for habitat development and restoration efforts and access programs on privately owned lands. This is an entry-level, temporary position with a flexible work schedule. The position is based in the Northeast District, which is headquartered in Norfolk and covers 27 counties. In addition to the assigned job duties, training and networking opportunities will be provided to allow the successful applicant to gain knowledge and experience for further career growth.
Job Duties: Under general direction from Wildlife Biologists and the District Manager, the Conservation Biologist will assist with implementation of the Open Fields and Waters program to provide public hunting, trapping, and fishing access on private lands. Duties will include contacting landowners to generate interest in the program, evaluating potential sites to enroll, creating maps, managing contracts, and posting boundary signs. The Conservation Biologist will also help with habitat improvement projects for a variety of species, using practices such as prescribed burning, selective herbicide application, invasive brush removal, native plant seeding, etc. Other opportunities may include monitoring of wildlife populations using standardized surveys and hunter interviews and responding to nuisance wildlife complaints.
Requirements/Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: 1 year experience OR 1 year coursework/training in fisheries management, natural resources, biology, and/or agriculture.
Prefer: Bachelor's degree in wildlife, fisheries, natural resources or biology. Applicants with Pesticide Applicators license and Class A CDL license with O endorsement preferred. Driver's license required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Excellent oral and written communication skills. Knowledge of wildlife habitat requirements, habitat management principles, and farming and ranching operations. Ability to operate hand tools, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), sprayers, and other equipment. Experience with prescribed fire and with geographic information systems (GIS) is highly desirable. Driver's license required.
