The Cape Cod Times, part of Gannett Inc. and the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a general assignment reporter who can own the Transportation beat. You don't need to know everything about transportation ; b eing willing to dig in deep is just as important. In this assignment, the reporter can cover anything and everything transportation-related that is important to people on Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket , s uch as ferry service, bridge construction , peak-season traffic, bike lanes and airport expansion.
In this position, you will become our expert on the upcoming $4 billion replacement of the Sagamore and Bourne bridges, the primary links for drivers between the mainland and Cape Cod. It's a project that has many elements and requires someone who can talk with members of Congress as well as the homeowner who lives in the shadow of one of the bridges. The replacement of the two bridges is one of the biggest public capital projects on Cape Cod.
Cape Cod is home to more than 220,000 people in a beautiful seaside environment that offers access to many outdoor activities - on land and water. The Cape, located about an hour south of Boston, has a vibrant creative economy from music to theater and craftspeople to writers. And the Cape is home to some of the most highly regarded scientific research institutions in the world.
Responsibilities:
Research, report and produce accurate , compelling content that informs and engages readers .
Be a curious, self-starting journalist who jumps to report on breaking news and beat- related topics with urg ency .
Use Google Trends, DataMiner and other search tools to mine story ideas from social media and news organizations .
Produce content in alternative storytelling formats as needed to best reach the target audience .
Optimize , aggregate and package content for digital publication. Enhance content with video, galleries, SEO meta-data, hyperlinks and images as needed .
Use real-time metrics to respond to user demand and reader interest .
Work collaboratively as part of a team with other reporters, photographers and editors. Occasionally, fill in on other beats as needed.
Requirements:
Bachelor's or master's in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience .
P rofessional journalism experience .
High-level writing, communication and time management skills .
Demonstrated ability to work well on deadline .
Ability to produce content that is engaging, clean, accurate and publication ready .
Comfort with using social media to enhance reporting and promote stories .
Understanding of reporting ethics and sourcing .
Valid driver's license and reliable transportation .
The position is required to live on Cape Cod or a nearby South Shore or South Coast city or town .
