Job Description:

The University of Iowa Health Care Perioperative Nursing Division, Main Operating Room (MOR) is seeking a Nurse Manager for Team 4 Gynecology/Urology/Transplant specialties.

The Nurse Manager for MOR provides managerial and clinical leadership to assure that all staff provide safe clinical care and have the education, methods, and resources to accomplish their performance objectives. Positions in this job family usually have limited involvement in direct patient care and focus their efforts on planning, organizing, directing, evaluating, and improving health care operations, clinical education programs and research programs of clinical and health service departments. However, this position may periodically need to assume some direct patient care responsibilities to support the staff and programs.



Key Areas of Responsibilities Include but are not limited to:

  • Hire, develop and manage the performance of staff in perioperative setting. Responsible for talent management of staff and identify succession plan strategies. Follow and apply leave management policies. Knowledgeable of and implement human resources policies/procedures and provisions in the collective bargaining agreements
  • Prepare budget or assist in development; provide projections and recommendations. Monitor and maintain unit/clinic operating budget within specified targets. Analyze variances and create action plans to take corrective action. Understand financial implications of collective bargaining agreements
  • Provide leadership to establish and/or maintain efficient and effective systems to ensure optimal patient outcomes. Identify trends and determine quality initiatives and priorities
  • Allocate resources to meet quality and productivity expectations. Review patient satisfaction data and develop, implement, and evaluate plan(s) to enhance patient satisfaction. Ensure unit/clinic is survey ready
  • Assess care coordination within multidisciplinary team to maximize patient satisfaction and continuity of care. Identify needs, trends, and forecasts in order to provide quality patient care and ensure appropriate flex staffing
  • Develop action plans for the unit/clinic or division that meets health care strategic goals
  • Monitor/evaluate goal implementation and provide progress reports to nursing leadership
  • Advocate for needs of unit/clinic with healthcare leaders. Facilitate multidisciplinary participation in clinical problem solving. Utilize unit councils to identify opportunities for improvement and innovative models of care using a multidisciplinary team to impact patient outcomes
  • Educate and mentor staff in the management of complex patient care issues. Provide clinical education and coaching to develop staff competency and professionalism. Participate in and support education of health care students
  • Encourage staff to participate in evidence-based practice research initiatives and incorporate best practices into unit operations
  • Ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and civil manner while appreciating the unique contribution of individuals from varied cultures, nationalities, genders, ages, etc
  • Ability to utilize existing resources and learning to achieve or exceed desired outcomes of current and future organizational goals/needs. Able to demonstrate ethical behavior in diverse situations while producing results
  • Ability to meet or exceed customer service needs and expectations and provide excellent service in a direct or indirect manner. Ability to effectively transmit and interpret information through appropriate communication with internal and external customers
  • Knowledge of, and ability to apply, policies and practices for planning and administering a budget
  • Knowledge of and ability to manage effective and smooth operations in a clinical service or department by utilizing various management principles and techniques
  • Understanding of the issues related to the decision-making process; ability to analyze situations fully and accurately and reach productive decisions
  • Knowledge and understanding of legislation and regulatory bodies affecting healthcare and clinical research practices
  • Ability to apply organization's performance management system, practices, and tools to developing and improving individual, team, and organizational performance

Percent of Time: 100%

Schedule: Days Monday- Friday, weekends, holidays, and call per unit needs.

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or Master's in Nursing is required. Preferred Master's degree (in nursing, MBA or healthcare related) or Doctorate (DNP, PhD). If candidate does not have a master's degree, they will be strongly encouraged to obtain one within 5 years of starting position.
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa or ability to obtain an Iowa license upon hire
  • Certification in a role or specialty through a nationally recognized professional certification body. If not currently certified, must seek certification in a role specialty as soon as eligible to sit for the exam.

Experience Requirements:

  • 3+ years of nursing leadership and management experience.
  • Demonstrated skill in leadership/management and experience in clinical practice required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be proficient in computer software applications.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills with patients/families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members as demonstrated through written and verbal interactions.
  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Demonstrated job related experience with and/or commitment to employee engagement in the work/academic environment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working in a large academic medical center
  • Experience working in a union environment
  • Experience with Gynecology, Urology and/or Transplant specialties
