Microbiology & Immunology has an exciting opportunity for a full time Scientist, SOM position. The incumbent supports the University's research goals and objectives by engaging in complex experiments and investigations in a range of areas, depending on specialty and interests. Moreover, an employee in this position contributes to the scientific community and promotes the University's reputation as a leader in the field.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS



  • Ph.D., M.D. or other doctoral level degree required.


  • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience.





Department Specific Functions



  • The position will involve in depth knowledge and experience in molecular and cellular immunology. Studies will require pcr, cloning, generation of fusion proteins, transfections, western blots as well as in vitro sterile culture for cellular assays assessing effector cell protein and rna analyses. In vivo studies in mice represent a major emphasis of the laboratory.


  • Detailed and comprehensive knowledge of flow cytometry involving both the use of multiple flow machines for spectral and non-spectral studies (ex. Cytek Aurora, Symphony) and data software to process and collect data. The individual needs to have experience in building 20-35 mAb panels for various studies including a new project examining peripheral blood MS patient samples who have received autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplants.


  • The position will entail development of a novel autoimmune disease model involving spinal cord and brain analyses. These studies require networking and interactions with individuals in the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis and Department of Neurological Surgery. A collaborative grant was funded for this work and the individual will lead these studies involving harvesting materials from animals, performing a number of techniques (including western blot, immuno-precipitation, protein expression, PCR, etc.) to generate primary data, process the data into tables and slides for presentations, Abstracts and an R01 application.


  • The individual will lead a new collaboration with the Department of Biomedical Engineering. This is new work that is directed to utilize micro-particles as a platform to deliver fusion proteins in a delayed manner to more effectively regulate the T regulatory cell compartment in mice. This work will have impact on both our bone marrow transplant studies as well as autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE - a model for multiple sclerosis=MS) work.


  • The position requires learning novel technology, i.e. spatial biology to use for analyzing tissue samples from animals undergoing pathological changes in tissue targeted by GVHD and autoimmune EAE. This methodology employs cutting edge co-detection by indexing (CODEX) technology to enable an unbiased and in-depth evaluation of the tissue architecture, cell neighborhoods, effector molecules and signaling pathways in infiltrating and parenchymal populations of interest to elucidate tissue differences between non-GVHD, untreated and treated GVHD as well as untreated and treated EAE / MS animals. The individual will examine spinal cord and brain tissue using CODEX to understand changes occurring in the nervous system in individuals with MS. This individual will help implement this technology into the laboratory.


  • The position requires working on the design of new fusion proteins. This work will develop molecules to augment the regulation of the immune system in vivo. The endeavor requires in-depth knowledge of protein structure such that the design can take into account what parts of the molecule should be used to exploit specific properties of an engineered protein to optimize it's binding and function. This work will include learning to use new software which provides structural 3D analysis to model how changes in amino acids affects potential binding and activity. This position will therefore develop triple fusion proteins that will include two ligands and a linker sequence.


  • This position requires continual updating of basic science and clinical knowledge. The individual must demonstrate basic science knowledge, reliability and responsibility such that they can teach science and absorb clinical information to help in the medical school teaching program as a Content Expert for the UMCL classes providing immunological expertise for the medical student small group interactions (30-40 students).


  • This position also involves direct, hands-on graduate and undergraduate student education. The person will be the go-to individual in the laboratory to educate and teach techniques and methods to graduate students pursuing the PhD degree as well as undergraduate students who perform research for credit and honors thesis in my lab. This involves explaining and teaching immunological cellular assays and molecular biology methodology to these students. This effort represents continual interaction and training of these students as well as medical students and fellows who matriculate through our lab working on research projects.
