Job Summary:

To provide scientific expertise in advanced materials characterization techniques and analysis. Responsible for the operation of advanced materials equipment, analysis of scientific findings, training users, preventative maintenance and repair, and daily upkeep of instrumentation and supporting equipment.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Operate, maintain, and provide scientific analysis and interpretation of results from advanced characterization equipment: x-ray equipment, optical and scanning and transmission electron microscopes, AFM, thermal analysis systems, FTIR, Raman, and Nanoindentation equipment, and specimen preparation-related equipment.

  • Instruct; train users (faculty, students, and postdocs) in the operation, and care of materials scientific equipment and provide scientific support regarding the theory behind these techniques.

  • Repair complex scientific equipment including equipment for which no diagrams are available and pieces of equipment that have been modified substantially since they were manufactured.

  • Install, test, and determine operating parameters in scientific equipment. Install and update software packages associated with the operation of equipment and analysis of findings.

  • Order parts, supplies and lab consumables and maintain a smooth operation of the facility.

  • Check and maintain an inventory of equipment, and spare parts and prepare bills every quarter based on usage of equipment.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:



  • Master's degree in materials science and engineering or a related field and/or equivalent relevant experience.

  • Experience in materials characterization techniques and analysis or equivalent experience.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • PhD in materials science or a related field.

  • Five plus (5+) years of experience in materials characterization techniques.
