Job Summary:
The Retail Pharmacist is responsible for delivering the highest level of pharmaceutical care to patients through excellent stewardship, efficient systems and operations, and collegial relationships and collaboration. The Retail Pharmacist assures pharmacy is an integral part of the healthcare delivery system and facilitates enhancement and expansion of the services and programs offered. This position collaborates with and serves as a resource for nurses, physicians, and other practitioners who participate in the management of patients receiving care at Nantucket Cottage Pharmacy, Nantucket Cottage Hospital, and its affiliated healthcare providers.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
• Provides compassionate care to patients.
• Works with the Pharmacy Manager to meet area specific goals and goals of the department.
• Establishes collaborative pharmacist-patient relationships.
• Coordinates and delivers Pharmacy services in compliance with all applicable policies, regulatory agency requirements and state and federal laws.
• Participates in interviews for hiring personnel and interns.
• Responsible for supervising and precepting technicians and pharmacy interns.
• Participates in training and development for other pharmacists, technicians and interns.
• Assures safe and accurate dispensing of medications.
• Provides accurate verification of medications.
• Performs effective drug utilization review.
• Interprets, evaluates, and accurately processes prescriptions.
• Identifies, mitigates, prevents, and documents problems with prescriptions.
• Provides counseling to patients on the proper use of their medications, possible side effects and the role of prescribed medications in the overall therapeutic care plan.
• Oversight of the prescription processing workflow including labeling and proper and safe storage of drugs.
• Handles all queues in the pharmacy software system, prioritizing Acute Rx's and Waiting patients.
• Monitors service performance metrics.
• Accurately dispenses controlled substances in accordance with Massachusetts and Federal laws.
• Participates in perpetual inventory of controlled substances.
• Participates in biennial controlled substance inventories.
• Participates in semi-annual and periodic inventory of all drugs.
• Assists in daily cycle counts.
• Maintains records in accordance with Massachusetts and Federal laws.
• Adheres to all Pharmacy policies and procedures and assists in developing new ones.
• Coordinates and provides support to clinical student programs.
• Assists in the return of outdated medications to the reverse distributer.
• Ensures the timely processing of return to stock medications.
• Participates in Meds to Beds program, once applicable.
• Handles patient's adherence through Time my Meds.
• Assists providers with prior authorization, use of Cover My Meds if applicable.
• Participates in direct patient care.
• Provides Medication Therapy Management.
• Participates in naloxone training and dispensing.
• Provides drug and drug related information to health care practitioners.
• Maintains and runs pharmacy system and automation.
• Represents the Pharmacy department in multidisciplinary committees as needed.
• Submits timely safety reports and provides follow up as needed.
• Participates in ordering of supplies and medications.
• Utilizes the MassPAT (PMP) prescription monitoring program for appropriate controlled substance monitoring.
• Troubleshoots issues that may occur with the automated dispensing robot.
• Participates in Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) compliance and monitoring.
• Provides immunizations to patients.
• Provides excellent customer service to all patients and staff
• Participates in quality improvement and error prevention strategies.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

• Knowledge of relevant Federal and State laws and regulations.
• Knowledge and expertise in traditional therapeutics and patient centered care.
• Knowledge of written policies and procedures.
• Ability to make appropriate decisions, develop and complete follow-up actions.
• Ability to considerately communicate with both internal and external customers.
• Ability to exhibit a high degree of professional excellence characterized by sound independent judgment, initiative, and a high standard of ethics.
• Effective oral, written and presentation skills.
• Strong prioritization and problem-solving skills.
• Strong attention to detail, organizational skills and flexibility to handle multiple tasks and deadlines.
• Skilled in Microsoft Office products.
• Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy or PharmD degree required.
• Current, valid Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy License required.
• 1 year of licensed experience required.
Special Requirements
• Day and evening shift assignments, as well as the need to be on-call for evening/nights, weekends, and holidays required.
• Ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds.
• Must be available to work in the case of a Hospital declared emergency.
