Director of Surgical Pathology, UPMC Pathology Service Line

DEPARTMENT/DIVISION:
The Division of Anatomic Pathology of UPMC, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (UPSOM) is recruiting for a Director of Surgical Pathology, with responsibilities for oversight of the Pathology Surgical Pathology Service Line UPMC. This role is critical for ensuring diagnostic precision and supporting patient treatment decisions.
The position will be in the appointment stream in the academic clinical track. The candidate needs to have subspecialty training and academic interest in Anatomic Pathology.
This position is based in Pittsburgh, with Surgical Pathology oversight responsibilities related to the UPMC Hospitals in the US.
The successful candidate will be expected to provide up to 50% time for clinical and teaching activities, with the clinical activities provided at the academic UPMC Hospitals in Pittsburgh (UPMC Presbyterian-Shadyside Hospitals as well as Magee Womens’ Hospital).
The candidate will provide leadership and oversight for Anatomic Pathology operations across the UPMC enterprise and will work closely with the Executive Vice-Chair for Anatomic Pathology, the systems Vice-Chair for Pathology Informatics and the Systems Director for Cytology.
The successful candidate will also have access to the established resources of the Dept. of Pathology at UPMC, for translational research endeavors. The Dept. of Pathology has a well-established Molecular, Digital and Computational Pathology infrastructure and resources. There is ongoing investment in Digital Pathology and AI applications in Pathology. The successful candidate would have access to the shared resources of our Imaging and Digital Pathology Laboratories, Molecular Anatomic Pathology and FISH laboratories.
JOB DUTIES:
CLINICAL SERVICE:
Expected Clinical service commitment of approximately 60%.
SYSTEM RESPONSIBILITIES:
This director will oversee all Operational aspects of Anatomic Pathology: the Frozen section service, grossing, Pathology Assistants, Informatics including Digital Pathology, non-cytology AP labs including automation, QA, and data analytics for Surgical Pathology (e.g. TAT), and AP Consult services. There will be additional faculty and technical resources for these roles, as well as collaboration, support, and cohesiveness with the Executive Vice-Chair for Anatomic Pathology, the Systems Vice-Chair for Pathology Informatics, and the Systems Director for Cytology.
Supervising diagnostic services, ensuring accuracy and quality of AP services. This will include managing workflow and resources, including laboratory staff and equipment. This will include developing and enforcing policies, procedures, and quality control measures.
Staying updated on advancements in pathology to improve practices, and collaborating with clinicians to ensure synchronization with their expected testing needs as requirements evolve.
Leading academic activities, such as teaching and research, in academic settings.
Synchronization of Surgical Pathology and Cytopathology protocols for diagnostics. This will include updating synoptics regularly and having a system-wide consistency related to required biomarker testing, as part of being updated per ASCO/CAP feedback and consistent with the highest level of expected standard of care.
Synchronization of technical protocols across the system. This will ensure the highest quality of Pathology interpretation. In addition, sharing protocols and best practices will provide efficiencies, eliminating different sites having to reinvent the wheel.
Implementation of similar protocols and procedures related to staining and scanning as we transition to a digital platform for sign-out and consultations.
Synchronization, harmonization, and education related to the roll-out of algorithms and artificial intelligence applications, which are going to be a critical part of the digital transition. These applications and algorithms will provide efficiencies as well as enhance diagnostic consistency and provide value-added information as these applications become more and more finetuned for extraction of treatment and outcome guidance from morphologic features.
Oversight streamlining, and facilitation of consultation services.
Serving as a central resource for aggregating feedback and any concerns/questions related to the interactions between the flagship Pittsburgh hospitals and the Community Hospital practices.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Must have an M.D. or D.O. with board certification in Anatomic Pathology or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology.
• Eligibility for medical licensure in Pennsylvania is required.
• Experience in a leadership role in a hospital-based service is beneficial, together with a proven/potential academic and administrative track record.
