Summary of Major Responsibilities

The Principal Scientist I works on significant and unique issues where analysis of situations or data requires and evaluation of intangible variables and may impact future concepts, products, or technologies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Develops and validates assays.
  • Operates scientific instrumentation related to performance of duties and notifies appropriate personnel of any problems.

  • Maintains lab notebook in a complete and consistent manner, following all legal, ISO, and OSR requirements, as well as keeping clear and complete.

  • Translates broad marketing requirements into product and/or technology specs.

  • Ability to problem solve in the absence of clear information.

  • Identifies technical tradeoff decisions that factor in cost, performance, and risk.

  • Contributes to the company’s portfolio of ideas and products that have the potential to provide solutions to unmet needs in the marketplace.

  • Supports and complies with the company’s hazardous waste management program; including following safe, hazardous waste handling practices.

  • Resourceful in finding ways of getting things done, tackling competing priorities successfully, influencing others, communicating delays, and offering alternate solutions.

  • Provides key insights, guidance, and technical expertise to the data and project meetings.

  • Represents the assay group in Project Core team meetings and responsible for appraising senior management regarding assay projects.

  • Prepares detailed reports and documentation that summarizes experiment results.

  • Ideates and evaluates key technologies/products to be introduced, either by development or acquisition, into the technology or product pipeline.

  • Acts as subject matter expert for scientific/technical information and background.

  • Evaluates non-conforming data to products or processes.

  • Higher level contributor with successful outcomes on multiple projects and key responsibilities.

  • Interprets results of experiments and recommends alternative experiments.

  • Contributes insights and suggestions and scientific trouble shooting on complex experiments.

  • Thoroughly understands relevant technology trends.

  • May attend technical conferences or seminars as needed.

  • Exercises discretion and independent judgement to interpret results, analyze data, and present findings in a professional knowledge and manner.

  • Flexible and adaptable to change and ambiguous information.

  • Presents findings at scientific meetings or to customers as needed.

  • Ability to justify a point of view in a constructive and positive way.

  • Prepares and contributes to publications and/or patents.

  • Plans, designs, and executes technical studies.

  • Presents clear project summaries and reports in written and verbal formats to internal and external scientific and management teams.

  • Trains techniques and procedures to research associates and scientists.

  • Provides strategic leadership within the organization.

  • Takes ownership and responsibilities for key tasks in meetings and communicates project status to senior management and stake holders.  

  • Go-to source for predicting how technology/product development outputs translate into market value and in collaboration with marketing, clinical affairs, and regulatory; plays an integral role in developing products that meet the market requirements.

  • Collaborates with other departments for transfer of projects or knowledge.

  • Identifies and manages cross-functional and cross-departmental dependencies impacted.

  • Acts independently to determine methods and procedures on new assignments and may oversee activities of other lower level personnel.

  • Lead complex projects; including projects involving research collaborators.

  • Responsible for multiple projects and provides oversight and management of multiple project teams.

  • Thoroughly understands the IP landscape, often reviews patents for FTO.

  • Provides scientific and technical leadership; influences decisions that affect project planning and experimental design.

  • May participate in committee review.

  • Creates formal networks with key decision makers and serves as external spokesperson for the organization.

  • Exercises latitude in determining objectives and approaches to critical assignments.

  • Displays clear communication with supervisor and team.

  • Excellent presentation skills.

  • Identifies and builds key relationships across the organization.

  • Ability to use various types of laboratory equipment including microscopes, microtomes, blades, strainers, pipettes for extended periods of time.

  • May perform repetitious actions using lab tools.

  • Ability to use near vision to view samples at close range.

  • May be exposed to hazardous materials, tissue specimens and instruments with moving parts, lasers, heating and freezing elements, and high-speed centrifugation.

  • Ability to grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications


  • PhD in Life Sciences, Mathematics, or related field; or Master’s degree in Life Sciences, Mathematics, or related field and 4 years of experience in lieu of PhD; or Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences, Mathematics, or related field and 6 years of experience in lieu of PhD.

  • 12+ years of experience in medical device/IVD, biotech, life science, or pharmaceutical industry.

  • 10+ years of industry experience in biology and/or chemistry.

  • Thorough knowledge of molecular biology, cell biology, next-generation sequencing (NGS), and related sciences.

  • Strong understanding of GMP, ISO, and Quality Systems.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.

  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
