Job Summary Statement: Under the supervision of the Assistant Dean of Diversity, Inclusion and Admissions (DIA), the Manager of Diversity and Outreach Initiatives/Student Affairs Officer (SAO) will manage, administer and implement activities related to outreach, recruitment, retention, diversity initiatives and sponsored projects. Examples include the Competitive Edge Bridge summer bridge program for entering doctoral students, UC-Historically Black Colleges and Universities (UC-HBCU) Initiative, UCLA chapter of the Edwin A. Bouchet Honor Society, Grad Strive 2.0, California State University (CSU) Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Scholars summer program, Graduate Ambassador Program, the Graduate-Undergraduate Mentorship (GUM) Program, and other diversity-related programming and events. The manager will market and promote UCLA graduate programs, develop and sustain partnerships with constituencies at UCLA and other institutions, coordinate recruitment, retention and diversity events and programming, and travel to professional conferences and DIA-related workshops and meetings. Incumbent will also provide counseling/information to prospective and current UCLA graduate students and direct staff functions related to this task. Along with the DIA team, the Manager will also process applications for graduate admission, applying the relevant policies and procedures to support departments in their recruitment and yielding activities.

The Manager will supervise, train, and mentor one regular DIA staff member as well as student staff supporting DIA-related projects and initiatives. The Manager will prepare reports and maintain accurate records to support quarterly, annual and long-range planning, and assist with planning, budgeting and preparing applications for external funding.

REQUIRED/PREFERRED

1. Knowledge of best practices, systems, supports, and tools for engaging graduate students of diverse backgrounds.

2. Knowledge of internal and external student resources and their graduate student support programs to contact them appropriately and to obtain needed information.

3. Basic knowledge of relational database systems and how they can be used for student outreach and admissions.

4. Demonstrated skill in analyzing information and problems so that substantive recommendations for improvement in systems, processes, departmental relations and program contact can be made to the Assistant Dean.

5. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with University offices, extramural agencies and University staff and faculty.

6. Skill in communicating effectively with diverse groups of students, faculty, staff and the public in a high-volume, intermittent public-contact setting.

7. Demonstrated skill in writing correct, concise and factual business correspondence and analytical reports.

8. Ability to travel on recruitment presentation visits and to work some evenings and weekends for DIA-related events.
