What You'll Do

About this job: The Model Maker engages with the Precor engineering team to deliver industry-leading exercise equipment. The ideal candidate will join our Design, Build, Test culture; exercising their expertise in the Precor Model Shop to bring concepts to life.

Precor Model Makers collaborate closely on cross-functional groups to develop our products. The incumbent is expected to provide feedback on design problems that arise during the prototyping phases to help meet and exceed customer expectations for function, ease of use, reliability, durability, and initial quality. Model Makers at Precor perform a variety of tasks requiring technical knowledge, creativity, and the ability to work both independently and with others.

In this role you will be responsible for: Prototype Fabrication and Technical Problem Solving, Shop Maintenance and Continuous Improvement


  • Interpret design intent and quality requirements for prototype components and assemblies provided by the engineer

  • Collaborate with engineers presenting ideas and solutions that could help meet design for manufacturability goals

  • Understand tolerance and finish necessities based on function of prototype component

  • Use fabrication and machining best practices to accurately create physical prototypes

  • Coordinate any out of house finishing or coatings

  • Assemble products for evaluation within a timeframe agreed upon by the engineer and Model Shop manager

  • Help execute engineering confidence and design validation tests

  • Work with the Precor Test Engineering Group to help build fixtures and components required for lifecycle testing.

  • Use verbal and written communication skills to report findings and ideas to Model Shop customers

  • Organize tools, sweep/clean shop areas, and maintain Model Shop machines & equipment

  • Provide manager with lists of materials and shop supplies as needed

  • Follow and recommend improvements to the shop safety policies and procedures

  • Utilize company processes, tools and practices while working to continually improve them

  • Collaborate with other employees within the R&D department sharing ideas to refine workflow, analyze product issues, and problem solve

  • Acquire and apply skills necessary to accomplish the above

What We're Looking For

In order to be successful in this role, you will have:Any equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job, will be considered.


  • High school diploma or GED required

  • Technical school training for machining/welding preferred

  • 3 years' minimum experience as a model maker, machinist, or fabricator required

  • MIG and TIG welding experience with alloy steels, and aluminum

  • Precision sheet metal and CAM experience is a plus

  • Use of manual and CNC vertical mill and lathe

  • Use of general fabrication equipment including band saws, chop saws, power sheet metal shear, sanders, grinders, and basic hand tools

  • Use measurement instruments including micrometers, calipers, bore gauges and digital read outs (DRO)

  • Perform shop mathematics such as basic algebra, geometry, and trigonometry

  • Understand engineering prints and dimensioning symbols

  • Calculate geometric tolerances

  • Build prototypes with very little supervision

  • Manage outside vendors to maintain project schedules

  • Work safely

  • Basic computer skills using Microsoft Office

  • Use and programming of Romer / Faro arms

  • Ability to run CAD software, Solidworks preferred

  • Knowledge and application of technical problem-solving techniques

  • Ability to handle simultaneous tasks in an environment which can be stressful at times

  • Ability to follow established technical standards, methods, and priorities

  • Design to prototype experience, selecting and sourcing the appropriate prototyping methods to build engineering prototypes

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Works safely in a clean, well outfitted machine / fabrication shop. Office work as required using MS Office products including Outlook, Word, and Excel. Occasional travel to local vendors as required.
