Job Description:

Self-Help is seeking a Portfolio Analyst to join our team in Durham, NC. The Portfolio Analyst provides critical, high-level project support to the Commercial Loan Risk Management Team. Responsibilities include leading and supporting projects and analysis for risk assessment, risk mitigation, and process improvements for a growing commercial loan portfolio. A focus on teamwork, problem solving, initiative, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects is critical to being successful in this role.


Essential Responsibilities:



  • Lead projects to optimize the monitoring platform, including reporting and process improvements.

  • Coordinate preparation for internal and external audits and regulatory examinations.

  • Coordinate covenant tracking for commercial loans to ensure operational and risk management action items are monitored and completed.

  • Conduct portfolio-level analysis and reporting to be presented to broad audiences including credit loss stress testing, economic, market,and industry trends, concentration risk, and sector-based risk assessment.

  • Complete quarterly and annual reports to support program tracking and loan pledging.

  • Support analysts and portfolio managers as needed with credit risk analysis, collateral valuation reviews, and site visits to borrower facilities.

  • Act as a change agent to drive Self-Help’s economic inclusion initiatives by integrating supplier diversity and the use of businesses owned by women and people of color in third-party contracting and vendor management for relevant products and services.

  • Assist with special projects and administrative assignments as requested.

  • Perform other duties as may be deemed necessary.


Credentials, Experience, and Skills:



  • Bachelor’s degree and 2 years relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience which could include finance, public planning, project management, community development, management consulting, or business management.

  • Master’s degree in business administration, urban planning, public policy, law, or related field preferred.

  • Knowledge of credit risk modeling and bank credit loss forecasting modeling.

  • Proven ability to manage a team project with the ability to initiate, juggle and lead multiple projects to meetgoals, objectives, and deadlines.

  • Strong commitment to our mission – creating economic opportunity for traditionally underserved communities.

  • Sensitivity to issues of low-wealth borrowers and communities and a desire to work in a racially and socially diverse organization.

  • Preference for working in organizations that place priority on teamwork and collaboration.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including group facilitation.

  • Strong financial analysis and/or analytical aptitude.

  • High level of skill with Excel

  • Experience with Salesforce platform preferred.

  • Strong attention to detail, task management,and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment under pressure, and undertake, execute, and deliver on-time multiple concurrent projects.

  • Willingness to travel (occasional overnight).
