Job Description:

The Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences is looking for an Online Academic Advisor to join its team. The Online Academic Advisor will advise and support students in online graduate programs. The position is responsible for program inquiries, monitoring student progress, assisting with general advising issues, developing student schedules, maintaining student records, and program admittance.  A successful candidate requires a balance of social skills to develop meaningful connections with students, attention to detail to provide accurate information, an understanding of academic policies and procedures, and a commitment to creating a welcoming environment. A candidate must be able to assist and engage with students through email, phone, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams. Other responsibilities are as follows, but not limited to:



  • Complete the Academic Advising Training Program

  • Engage in academic advising during the Fall, Spring, and Summer terms

  • Meet with students on academic probation to discuss academic success plan

  • Discuss goals for individual students and connect them with the courses and resources to achieve those goals

  • Complete academic forms such as VA, ROTC, Financial Aid Forms, and petitions.

  • Respond to student emails in a timely fashion

  • Assist transfer and readmitted students with the transfer/readmission process

  • Assist students in adding/dropping classes and transferring sections

  • Engage as a member of the Provost's Advisory Committee on Academic Advising community

  • Represent department in recruitment and outreach events

Required Education: Bachelor’s degree 


Equivalency/Substitution:  Will accept 48 months academic advising or student services experience in lieu of Bachelor's degree


Skills:



  • Ability to speak, read and write clear, concise English

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office

  • Excellent communication skills (written and spoken) and appropriate vocabulary to obtain and convey information professionally with diplomacy and clarity

  • Ability to maintain a congenial, helpful attitude when faced with difficult situations and to respond with tact and sensitivity in all communications and settings

  • Ability to communicate well and build rapport quickly with students, faculty, and staff

  • Demonstrated ability to be detail-oriented and organized, especially with data and student information

  • Ability to maintain and/or establish organized electronic and paper filing systems

  • Ability to deal with confidential and sensitive information with discretion

  • Orientation to detail for accuracy of data and information

  • Ability to produce reports and complete work within deadlines

  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, administrators, and students; to exercise initiative and accept responsibility; to work proactively under heavy workload with frequent interruptions; and to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Willingness to work well with interdepartmental teams and initiatives

  • Ability to serve a diverse student body in an inclusive manner

  • Ability to read and interpret policy as well as State and Federal regulations

Advertised Physical Requirements:



  • Standard office environment, with extensive computer use and interpersonal contact.

  • Ability to engage in repetitive motions and communicate.


Departmental Preferences:



  • Master's degree

  • Previous experience in online academic advising


Supervision: No Supervisory Duties
