Position: Hospitalist 

Department: Hospitalist Services 

Supervisor: Director of Hospitalist Department

Position Summary: Provides comprehensive direct and indirect patient care in the inpatient settings across the continuum of care and backs up the Emergency Department in time of high patient census or high patient acuity. Response time is thirty-minutes while working in Hospitalist Role. Communicates with collaborating physician regarding changes in patient’s clinical condition, results of diagnostic studies, patient symptomatology as appropriate, and issues outside of the Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner’s (APNP) scope of practice. In response to changes in patient condition, quickly, accurately and effectively modifies therapeutic interventions to promote optimal health status. Conducts staff and patient education to promote wellness and prevention of health problems. Develops resources and communicates knowledge to members of healthcare team, patients, and their family members. The American Nurses Association (ANA) Scope and Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics for Nurses provide for a basis for practice for the APNP. 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Active Wisconsin R.N. license with eligibility to practice in the State of Wisconsin. 
  • National certification (e.g. ANCC or AANP) as a APNP with recertification every 5 years under regulating agencies guidelines.
  • Current prescriptive authority in the state of Wisconsin (APNP certification and DEA) obtaining 8 contact hours per year in clinical pharmacology/therapeutics relevant to APNP’s area of practice.
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications. 
  • Hospital privileges.
  • Education - Nurse Practitioner, minimum of master’s degree.
  • 1 - 2 year’s experience as Nurse Practitioner Hospitalist and/or completion of a Hospitalist boot camp.

Service: 

  • Contributes to an environment of high-performance expectations, mutual trust, growth, and superior service towards patients/staff.
  • Provides leadership and direction pursuant to hospital and nursing philosophy.
  • Provides input to patient care policies and procedures for the nursing departments. Works with the Medical Staff to coordinate medical and nursing management of patient care.
  • Supervises all nursing activities related to age specific patient care.
  • Evaluates patient care utilizing nursing process.
  • Administers nursing care to patients.
  • Provides role of patient advocate.
  • Serves as a clinical resource person to nursing and other departments. 
  • Assists in coordinating continuing education programs, continuous quality improvement programs and quality assurance.
  • Serves on hospital medical staff committees as assigned.
  • Assists in department specific orientation to new employees related to patient care, job responsibilities, infection control, safety, health care management, new equipment, and other needs. Ensures staff’s ability to fulfill specified responsibilities. 
  • Complies with departmental compliance with OSHA Standards and Environment of care policies and procedures.
  • Attends mandatory in-services as scheduled. 
  • Complies with departmental Infection Control policies and procedures, blood and body fluid precautions and other pertinent policies and procedures.

  • Ensures that interactions between APNP and staff is professional and focused on achieving optimum patient outcomes.  
  • Role models professional performance with strong clinical performance and supportive leadership to create positive environment.

  • Monitors safety and quality of equipment and supplies.
  • Organizes patient care; ensures continuity of care.
  • Is knowledgeable of safety and emergency programs/procedures.
  • Fosters good public relations for the unit, the nursing department, and the organization.
  • Exhibits and promotes a positive attitude and outlook in the workplace and in the community.  Demonstrates behavior that is conducive to the professional operation of the organization.

Finance:

  • Works closely with the Inpatient Services Director, Medical Director, Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in facilitating continuous improvement and cost containment strategies.
  • Participates in the annual development of the Hospitalist Program operating budgets and long term capital expenditure plans, and strives to stay within budget.
  • Continually assesses the needs for the department, gathers appropriate statistical data, makes internal comparisons of its performance and processes and outcomes over time and compares performance data about its processes and outcomes to other hospitals in order to systematically improve its performance. Reports results quarterly.

Growth: 

  • Maintains routine contact with Hospitalist team to discuss continued development of practice. 
  • Encourages and promotes professional growth and development of nursing staff.
  • Assumes responsibility for own personal continuing education and self-development needs.
  • Is an active member for a professional organization pertinent to licensure, if applicable, and/or present position.
