Performs laboratory testing and some analysis on multiple types of specimen samples. Operates and properly sterilizes equipment and maintains inventory and assists with ordering.
The Stauffer Lab maintains a research program that aims to establish cell type- and circuit-specific tools and techniques for use in systems neuroscience research and translational gene therapy applications. To achieve these goals, we identify critical cell types in human and non-human primate brain, create viral vectors to deliver genes to those cell types, and maintain repositories of brain tissue, vectors, and results.
We are interested in an experienced and enthusiastic individual to: (1) Process tissue (freezing, preserving, sectioning); (2) Perform immunohistochemistry techniques; (3) Perform fluorescent in situ hybridization; (4) Take images of tissue on confocal and epifluorescence microscopes using NIS-Elements software; and (5) Perform cell counting quantification of viral expression. Some experience with or knowledge of R, Python, Matlab, and Microsoft Office is preferred. This position also offers diverse experiences for those interested in expanding their skillset. For instance, there will be opportunities to observe, and potentially participate in, surgeries and other specialized technical procedures.
A successful candidate will have some laboratory experience, with training in neuroscience, molecular biology, bioengineering, or a related field. Additional criteria include familiarity with data analysis and computational techniques and a desire to help us understand how the brain works. Salary commensurate with education and experience. Candidate should be highly capable in written and verbal communication and strongly motivated to learn new skills.
A Bachelor's degree with one to two years of experience is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted per university guidelines. Experience handling valuable tissue, working in a high-stakes environment, and producing usable data is required. The successful candidate must complete several modules pertaining to laboratory safety and proper research conduct.
Must be able to lift 30 lbs.
