The Graduate Assistant performs duties and responsibilities under the general direction of the Assistant Director of Student Success and Coaching. The position will primarily assist the Learning Coach program, and academic outreach needs. This position will work independently and in team settings to promote academic success, student engagement, personal development, and meaningful connections with SHSU Students, Faculty, Staff, and resources.



Job Duties and Responsibilities:


· Provide support to the Academic Outreach & Recovery team with an emphasis on the Learning Coach program and initiatives. Act as the primary liaison to the Learning Coach team in the absence of the Assistant Director.· Conduct individual and group academic coaching appointments with student clients at the Academic Success Center. Focusing on proactive academic preparation, modeling successful learning strategies, and building rapport with clients.· Create, lead, and deliver internal and external outreach activities/initiatives such as: academic support alerts, workshops, and other programming services to the campus community.· Represent and support logistics for Academic Success Center initiatives including, but not limited to, Student Learning Orientations, Bearkat Kickoff, Classroom Visits, etc.· Assist with the planning and implementation of program assessment, resulting in evidence-based improvements.· Make referrals where needed to guide students in seeking appropriate campus support.



Non-essential Duties and Responsibilities:


· Performs additional job-related duties and responsibilities as requested.



Work Hours, Environment:


· In-person at the Academic Success Center in the Newton Gresham Library.· 20 hours per week during the standard Monday-Friday 8:00-5:00 business week.· Some weekend and evening hours may be required.



Knowledge, Skills and Ability:· Presents a growth mindset and willingness to learn quickly.· Excellent communication in person, by telephone, and virtually/online.· Ability to plan, implement, evaluate, and report activities conducted.· Ability to present oneself in an appropriately personable and professional manner to students and staff.· Ability to receive and utilize constructive feedback regarding performance, presentation, and relationships with others.· Ability to be both consistent and flexible as circumstances warrant.· Ability to communicate via email, teams and other technology platforms.


Other Requirements for the Position:


Minimum Qualifications:


This position entails extensive student contact and requires an individual who demonstrates the following:


· Enrollment in a SHSU Master's or Doctoral Program.· Commit to in-person work at the Huntsville campus in the Newton Gresham Library for an academic year. Work a minimum of 20 hours per week, at least 3 days a week.· Willing to learn, execute and assess culturally responsive personal, academic, and professional programming, especially to individuals with varied backgrounds.· Exceptional interpersonal communication skills and an ability to work effectively and collaboratively with varying teams and populations.· Strong problem-solving, efficient time management and self-starter skills.· Willingness to receive feedback from supervisor and colleagues.· Computer Skills and familiarity with Office 365 applications.



Preferred Qualifications:


· Interest in pursuing a career in higher education.· Working knowledge of Teams, Zoom, Campus Connect.· Bilingual skills.
