Ongoing translational research in the Vincent Center for Reproductive Biology (VCRB) focuses on gynecologic cancers and oncofertility.

This Junior level Research Technician directly reports to the Principal Investigator and/or administrative managers of the laboratories and is expected to work independently on assigned research with guidance from a Research Fellow or Principal Investigator. The ideal candidate is expected to have basic knowledge of cell biology, genetics, biochemistry, and molecular biology, has the ability to use/build cellular and animal models, especially transgenic mice, to complete the assigned gynecological cancer research projects after extensive research training in the research laboratory. S/he will also be responsible for documenting, analyzing, and reporting the results derived from research models and/or patient samples, and preparing manuscripts for publication. In addition, the individual will assist with gathering information needed for grant preparation and progress report. Importantly, the candidate will be expected to provide necessary research support for other researchers and assist the training of new lab members.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary responsibility of this role will be performing experiments in the biomedical research laboratory to study the etiology of gynecological cancers (mainly ovarian and cervical cancer) by creating transgenic mouse models, xenograft mouse models, and PDX mouse models. The applicant is also responsible for documenting, analyzing, and reporting the results associated with mouse model work. In addition, the applicant is expected to be able to provide research support (e.g., transgenic animal handling and small animal surgery) for Research fellows, including postdoctoral researchers and graduate students. In addition

The primary responsibilities for the junior level research technicians (after extensive research training in our lab) in our lab are as follows:

  • Use established protocol to generate required transgenic animals for the ovarian and cervical cancer etiology projects; perform routine surgeries on small experimental animals after extensive training; collect and process samples from animal models and analyze these samples using histological, pathological, and biochemical analyses.

  • Design and conduct cellular model-based experiments with assistance from PI and Research Fellows; participate in designing complex experiments; troubleshoot experimental problems and provide alternative approaches.

  • Train new researchers and technicians on techniques routinely used in the cancer research lab. These techniques include, but are not limited to, transgenic animal genotyping, sample collection & processing, RT-PCR, western blot, vector construction, viral packaging, cell culture, cell transfection, and cell immortalization. Provide animal model-associated trainings (transgenic mouse colony maintenance, animal breeding, genotyping, small animal surgeries, etc.) for new researchers.

  • Use appropriate tools to perform statistical analyses; judge the validity and reliability of experimental data, summarize research results, and prepare written progress reports.

  • Coordinate and collaborate with investigators in other laboratories to ensure success of ongoing or new projects; be able to work with scientists across a broad range of backgrounds.

  • In-depth knowledge of experimental animal care and use, transgenic mouse breeding, and mouse colony maintaining. Understanding the physical, behavioral, and environmental requirements of individual experimental animal species. Knowing how to interpret and predict the animals' responses during studying.

  • The ability to use/build cellular and animal models to complete the assigned projects (including small animal surgery) with assistance from PI and Research Fellows; displaying initiative to introduce new methodologies to research study.

  • Good time management skills and the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Sound interpersonal skills and the ability to train and supervise junior laboratory members.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, statistical software, and mega-data analyzing tools.

  • B.S. in Biology or Biomedicine with basic biochemistry/biomedical research training.

  • Bachelor's degree in animal science preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • 1-2 years of laboratory experience required.

  • Experience and/or training in basic wet laboratory research required.

  • Experience in small animal husbandry and surgery are highly preferred.

  • Previous experience in cell culture, molecular biology, and histological studies is a plus.
